ARDAL NORTH WEST – APRIL 12

Llanrwst United 0
CPD Y Rhyl 1879 2 (Nicolson OG 27, D Proctor pen 54)

Raise your glasses to Rhyl 1879 – league title winners for a second time since forming just five years ago.

Paul Moore and Ronnie Green’s side picked up the win needed to be crowned champions today with an efficient performance at Llanrwst.

The victory clinches a place in the Tier 2 JD Cymru North for the phoenix club next season.

Moore, appointed in November, was largely unknown in Welsh football circles, yet proved to have the magic touch with the Lilywhites winning 15 and losing just two of 19 league games under his leadership.

Rhyl were handily placed after seven wins in 10 league starts when Gareth Thomas departed as manager in late October, but the team had fared disappointingly in cups and it was felt a change was needed at the newly-named Hops and Barley Community Stadium.

Moore and Green brought in some exciting new faces and kept many of the players from the previous regime on the books. All has gone swimmingly over five fantastic months.

Last weekend’s fine 3-1 win over Porthmadog got 1879 back on track after a couple of blips and the title was sealed at Parc Gwydir.

Rhyl took the lead in the 27th minute.

A long delivery forward down the left found Dylan Proctor, who beat the opposition right back and drilled the ball into a dangerous area where Llanrwst defender Chris Nicolson found his own net with two visiting players behind him waiting to pounce.

Nine minutes into the second half, the away fans were ecstatic after Paul Fleming was fouled in the box and Proctor netted his 31st goal of the season from the spot.

Llanrwst’s Alex Raloka was red-carded on 81 minutes for a bad challenge on Billy Holmes.

The final whistle blew to joyous celebrations for the Lilywhites fans.
