Caernarfon Town record biggest league win in more than five years

JD CYMRU PREMIER LEAGUE – MARCH 21, 2025

Caernarfon Town 5 (Downey 33 & 57, K Lloyd 51, L Lloyd 63 & 75)
Bala Town 0

Five-star Caernarfon Town equalled their biggest margin of victory since returning to the Cymru Premier in 2018-19 as they thrashed former jinx side Bala Town at The Oval on Friday night.

Not since whipping Airbus UK Broughton 5-0 at home on December 13, 2019, had the Canaries managed to chalk up such a big win – 166 games ago.

The scorers on that occasion were Darren Thomas (2), Leo Smith, Sion Bradley and Sam Jones. More than five years on, Caernarfon’s heroes were double marksmen Louis Lloyd and Sam Downey.

Friday night also saw Caernarfon make it three straight wins over Bala and eight unbeaten against the Lakesiders, who had gone undefeated in the previous seven tussles with the Cofis.

And the 5-0 outcome represents the Canaries’ biggest ever league win over Bala.

Colin Caton’s side are still without a win in the phase 2 Championship Conference – lost six and drawn one. Caernarfon lie fourth with three wins, three losses and a draw.

A crowd of 610 at The Oval saw a fairly even first half-hour, Adam Davies’ drive well saved low down by Bala stopper Joel Torrence before Nathan Peate’s header from a Lassana Mendes corner was kept out by home keeper Ben Hughes.

The deadlock was broken in the 33rd minute when a corner from the right led to an almighty scramble which ended with Downey lashing home.

Caernarfon were well on top in the second half and made it two in the 51st minute when Kieran Lloyd back-headed into his own net under pressure from Louis Lloyd.

Downey made it three on 57 with a fierce low strike from more than 20 yards which proved too good for the diving Torrence.

Louis Lloyd then got in on the act when from the right-side of the box he latched onto a long bouncing ball and drilled beyond the keeper.

And Louis Lloyd completed the scoring when he met onto a defence-splitting pass from Davies and slid home his 13th league goal of the season.
