Christmas football news: The City is back in Bangor!

Bangor 1876 football club has amended its name to include ‘City’ in the title.

Supporters voted 2 to 1 to rename the fan-owned club Bangor City 1876.

The former Bangor City FC was founded in 1876 and enjoyed much success across many generations before being dissolved in 2022 after some years of decline.

A new club, Bangor 1876, emerged in the city in 2019-20 and is now in its sixth season, having risen through the Welsh football pyramid from tier 6 to 2.

The club recently entered a partnership with the newly-named Bangor City Stadium (formerly Nantporth) to base itself there.

Today, Bangor City 1876 chairman Glynne Roberts revealed news of the name change.

He said: “As we approach our sixth Christmas, we can reflect again on our phenomenal achievement to create a club from scratch, establish a robust structure and incredible fanbase, coupled with on-field success that has once again brought a smile to the faces of the football fans of Bangor.

“We need to be planning for the future, and part of this was to canvas the views of members regarding the name of the club.

“By a majority of 2-to-1, there was approval to change the name to include “City” – so we complete the circle in becoming Bangor City 1876.

“But the one thing we need to remember is that the 1876 is here to stay – it has become our brand, our identity, and our pride in creating such a great club.

“On the pitch, I would like to thank Johno and his coaching team for all their hard work, in establishing us as a Tier 2 side, and for the dedication and commitment they show week in, week out. We are lucky to have them, and look forward to future success.

“I would also like to thank those who volunteer for the club. As always, we need more people to help, so please consider what you can offer, either on match day as general stewards, or in utilising the skills you have to help us take the club forward.

” A great example of this is the work that Jack and Max are doing to improve our social media profile and to create the 1876 podcasts. The first podcast is out, with more to follow shortly.
