Three main contenders emerged for the Grassroots North Wales Clwb y Mis/Club of the Month for September.
All three kept a 100 percent record during the month which equated to four straight wins.
In the frame were: Mold Alexandra (Cymru North – tier 2), CPD Y Rhyl 1879 (Ardal North West – tier 3) and Lex XI (North East Wales League Premier Division – tier 4).
It was a close-run thing, but we’ve gone for Mold, who in the league won away at Caersws and Guilsfield, two notoriously difficult places to get a result, defeated tricky Ruthin Town at home and saw off holders Flint Mountain in the NEWFA Challenge Cup.
What swung it for the Alex is they’ve taken on a brand new manager in Barry Owen, who has had a very hard act to follow in Mike Cunningham and Steve Monk, the pair having stepped down last season.
In his first stint as a tier 2 manager, Owen may have been expected to need time to adjust, but after losing three of his first five league matches, the former Llanrwst United and St Asaph boss has celebrated four wins on the bounce to reach the top four.
While Rhyl 1879 and Lex have been outstanding in September, both would have been expected to rank high in their respective leagues – the Lilywhites are currently second in ANW and the Law top their division.
For Mold, after those early losses, a mid-table position may have been a reasonable one by this point, but the Alyn Park side are flying high – also take into account they have lost goal machine Danny Warren to Airbus. However, they do have Damase Kiwanda, scorer of five against Prestatyn in a 7-0 win on his full debut last month.
Barry Owen and his management team and players are doing brilliantly.
