They are the most successful club in Polish football history, once reached a European Cup semi-final and last season beat Aston Villa in the UEFA Conference League.
They are also Caernarfon Town’s next opponents in Europe – meet Legia Warsaw.
After overcoming Northern Ireland Premiership outfit Crusaders on penalties in the Conference League’s first qualifying round, the Canaries could hardly have landed a tougher draw than the Legionaries at this 2QR stage of Europe’s third-tier knockout competition.
While Caernarfon have played just two European matches in their history, Legia have featured in 255 games since 1956-57, winning 113, recording 59 draws and 83 defeats.
Their breakdown of competition appearances is: UEFA Cup/Europa League 125, Champions League/European Cup 73, Cup Winners’ Cup 37, Uefa Conference League 14 and Inter-Cities Fairs Cup 6.
In 1969-70, they reached the European Cup semi-finals, losing 2-0 over two legs to Feyernoord of the Netherlands. They made the last eight the following season, going out on away goals to Atletico Madrid.
Legia were eliminated 4-2 on aggregate against eventual competition winners Manchester United in the 1990/91 Cup Winners Cup semi-finals.
Last season, they beat Aston Villa 3-2 at home in the Conference League group stage, where they finished second to reach the knockout round.
Legia’s only previous clash with Cymru Premier opposition came in the 2013-14 Champions League, when they whipped The New Saints 4-1 on aggregate.
Domestically, Legia Warszawa, commonly referred to as Legia Warsaw or Legia, is the most successful Polish football club of all-time, winning a record 15 Ekstraklasa champions titles, a highest-ever 20 Polish Cups and 5 Polish Super Cup trophies.
The club’s home venue is the Polish Army Stadium (Stadion Wojska Polskiego). Legia is the only Polish club never to have been relegated from the nation’s top flight since World War II.
Legia’s current squad includes Czech international Tomáš Pekhart, 35, a former Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton prospect who has won 26 full caps for his country and has notched 49 goals in 104 appearances for the Legionaries.
Defender Artur Jędrzejczyk, 36, has made close on 300 appearances for Legia and represented Poland 41 times.
Jean-Pierre Nsame, 31, is a Cameroon international currently on loan with Legia from Osian Roberts’ Italian Serie A club Como.
Nsame previously had a great scoring record in the Swiss Super League with Servette and Young Boys.
Right-winger Kacper Chodyna, 25, last month signed for Legia from fellow Polish club Zagłębie Lubin for an estimated €860,000.
