FEATURE: Why Gwalchmai are the silverware kings of Ynys Môn

Gwalchmai’s famous treble winners of 2009-10

Yesterday saw Gwalchmai win their 43rd trophy since forming in 1946.

This makes the village club, we believe, the most prolific team from Ynys Môn when it comes to collecting silverware.

Other clubs from the island have won many honours at higher levels of the pyramid, but when it comes to pure numbers, the Maes Meurig men top the trophies chart.

Gwalchmai hold the joint record for most Anglesey League titles, and are third in the all-time list of NWCFA Junior Cup winners.

While they had won the vast majority of competitions available at their standard over the years, the NWCFA Intermediate Cup had eluded them until Saturday, when they beat Penrhyndeudraeth 3-1 in the final at Nantporth Stadium.

Gwalchmai legends Paul Owen and Will Williams. Paul raised the bar when he managed Gwalch to the Gwynedd League treble in 2009-10 and into the Welsh Alliance (tier 3) for the first time. Will is “Mr Gwalchmai” – 50 years with the club. The pair are pictured with the NWCFA Intermediate Cup won by Gwalchmai on May 18, 2024
