NORTH EAST WALES FOOTBALL LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION REPORTS – TUESDAY, MAY 14

Penyffordd Lions 3 Corwen 3

Corwen are the 2023-24 North East Wales League Premier Division champions!

After just one season in Tier 4, the War Memorial Ground outfit clinched the Premier title with a 3-3 draw at Penyffordd Lions tonight.

An Owen Cordiner hat-trick secured the point Jamie Hulse’s side needed to be crowned champions with three games to spare.

Cordiner boosted his season’s goals tally to 32 in all competitions with his latest heroics.

Corwen won their first 12 league fixtures to put them in pole position for the title, and although they had been victorious in just two of their last six games before tonight, what they had already accumulated in the bank was enough to guide them to glory.

Hat-trick hero Owen Cordiner

This evening’s game at Ysgol Penyffordd saw the hosts take a ninth minute lead through Simon Smith.

Ben Hughes made it 2-0 with a 21st minute penalty, but Cordiner pulled one back in first half stoppage time.

The second half saw the visitors up a gear, Cordiner making it 2-2 on 54 before Scott Evans set him up for his treble after 64.

Hughes levelled it for the Lions, but that was the end of the scoring and Corwen were champions.

No doubt there will be lively heavenly celebrations going on tonight led by the late Huw ‘Chick’ Jones, Mr Corwen FC who sadly passed away in 2020.

Mynydd Isa 2 Rhostyllen 2

Two late goals earned Rhostyllen a share of the spoils at Estadio de Mark Lopez this evening.

Jay Wiles put Isa in front on 20 minutes and when George Davies made it 2-0 after 57, it looked like the points were heading for the hosts.

However, the in-form Liam Sklenar halved the deficit on 85 and five minutes into added time Tom Douglas notched his 27th goal of the season to salvage a draw.

Lewis Clamp assisted for both goals.
