NEWFA Challenge Cup final preview: Two huge games in two days for Flint Mountain!

Flint Mountain manager Aden Shannon has a busy weekend coming up

Flint Mountain have been forced to play two games in two days as they chase glory on three fronts at the back end of the 2023-24 season.

On Friday night, Aden Shannon’s Tier 3 side will take on Cymru North heavyweights Mold Alexandra in the final of the NEWFA Challenge Cup, kick-off 7.30 pm at Ruthin Town’s Memorial Playing Fields.

Less than 24 hours later, Mountain must travel to relegation battlers CPD Y Felinheli for an Ardal North West fixture.

A victory would see the Flint outfit crowned champions in a week where they have secured a Tier 2 licence required to compete in the Cymru North next season.

It’s a demanding ask of Mountain, who are also in the Ardal Northern League Cup semi-finals, but they have proved often this season they are up to most tasks.

PREVIEW: NEWFA CHALLENGE CUP FINAL

Flint Mountain v Mold Alexandra – Friday, May 10, 7.30 pm at Memorial Playing Fields, Ruthin Town

Two treble-chasers will meet head on in the NEWFA Challenge Cup final on Friday evening at Ruthin.

Cymru North outfit Mold Alexandra, who have already lifted national and northern WBS League Cups, take on Ardal North West leaders and Ardal Northern Cup semi-finalists Flint Mountain on the Memorial Playing Fields.

It should be a cracking battle, with Tier 3 giant-killers Mountain having already knocked out Cymru North sides Buckley Town and Holywell Town in this competition during 2023-24.

Aden Shannon’s side, strong favourites to lift the Ardal North West title and claim promotion to the Tier 2 Cymru North, also made it all the way to the Welsh Cup quarter-finals this term.

Mold, meanwhile, this season achieved their highest Cymru North position of fourth, as well as beating Llandudno in the WBS League Cup Northern final before stunning favourites Briton Ferry Llansawel to scoop the national prize as well.

Two teams which have had magnificent seasons – but something has to give on the night.

Can Mountain see off another higher-level opponent, or will it be the Alex’s night to complete a trophy treble?

The NEWFA CHALLENGE CUP FINAL is part of finals weekend being staged by the North East Wales FA at Ruthin Town.
