700 senior career goals for Asa Thomas – what a man!
Today the Trearddur Bay net-buster supreme reached century number seven with a hat-trick in his team’s 8-3 victory at Llannerchymedd.
Asa, 32, is believed to be the all-time record goalscorer in North Wales senior football.
He recently passed the 683-goal milestone of prolific former Bro Cernyw striker Euryn Williams, having last season broken fellow Holyhead man and legend Tommy Welsh’s North Wales Coast record total of 631 set in the 1950’s and 60’s.
We have been covering Asa’s career in detail since his phenomenal 112-goal haul for Trearddur Bay United in the 2010-11 season.
Grassroots North Wales have 602 of his goals recorded, but thanks to Asa’s close friend Gary-Jo Owen, we managed to establish he notched 98 in three previous seasons going back to the beginning of his career.
Asa has pocketed 313 goals for current club Trearddur Bay, under their current name and formerly as United combined, having reached the 300-mark for the Beach Boys in January.
On his latest achievement, Asa said: “Winners never quit and quitters never win! I’m over the moon to get to the 700 mark – a massive achievement for myself. No more future targets now, I’m just going to carry on scoring and see how many I can finish on.
“Who would have known all them years ago as a 16 year old lad I would get to 700 goals! It would be amazing to hand the baton to my son Brodie now and see if he can overtake myself – that would be something special.”
Now in his 16th season in senior football, Asa would love to know how many matches it has taken him to get to 700 goals.
At a rough estimate, it could be around the 400 mark, but it would be very difficult to establish a precise figure.
He added: “I missed 4 months in a season while at Morawelon when I ripped tendons in my foot while playing in Macedonia for Wales (North Wales Coast in UEFA Regions Cup). That’s it really, apart from the odd suspension I haven’t missed many games.”
Asa has only scored below 20 in a season once in his career, and that was in the shortened 2019-20 campaign due to Covid, when he represented both Holyhead Town and, for a short spell, Holyhead Hotspur.
In his goal-packed career, he has played in tiers 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Asa has picked up many winners’ medals over the years, one of his best being for the Welsh Alliance title with Trearddur Bay in 2015-16. when he was league top-scorer with 34 goals and nabbed 48 in all competitions, while he also landed a quadruple with Bay in 2010-11.
