Trearddur Bay lose out to impressive Powys visitors Berriew

Trearddur Bay players observe a minute’s silence for Remembrance Sunday

Bay’s first game in this season’s Betty Pickering Cup ended in a two-goal defeat at the hands of Berriew, who enjoyed their second group win on the bounce.

The village side from Powys had pipped Llanystumdwy 1-0 in their opening match and kept their perfect record after a long journey to Anglesey.

Credit to the Trearddur Bay players who woke up early and worked hard to get the pitch to a playable standard.

Both teams paid their respects on Remembrance Sunday with a minute’s silence before the game.

In tough conditions, the game got off to a slow start, both teams trying to get used to the awkward surface.

Credit to Berriew, who started much brighter. Their pressure paid off on the eighth minute when they took the lead through Yasmin Griffiths.

The rest of the half was quite slow, mainly due to muddy pitch and the rain that began falling heavily.

Trearddur Bay struggled to get going and found themselves 1-0 down at half time.

At the interval, Bay brought on Saffron Williams for Amelia Roberts.

Trearddur started the half brighter, Rhian Griffiths and Hannah Smith working well in the middle to keep possession. They couldn’t find a way through, though, and Berriew scored a second goal through sub Ayesha Owen-Jones with an acrobatic finish.

Bay made a double change, Stacey Evans and Abbie Manning introduced for Shelley McMullan and Beth Topping.

One more change by the home team saw Cari Roberts brought on for Rhian Griffiths, but Berriew rode the game out.

Praise is due to Trearddur keeper Gem Lancaster, who had a fine game between the sticks.

An afternoon to forget for the home side, who will be looking to make amends next week against Llanystumdwy.
