Mochdre Sports end fine season in winning style

To finish third in a highly competitive tier 4 North Wales Coast East Premier Division is a really fine achievement for Mochdre Sports.

It was certainly a Highway to Heaven ending to the 2022-23 season for Jonathan Smith’s side as they lost just once in their last nine games and took 20 points out of a possible 27.

A final record of 16 wins, 8 draws and 6 defeats is pretty good going . Only runaway champions St Asaph City lost fewer matches.

One of Mochdre’s finest wins was a 6-2 thrashing in October of a Prestatyn Sports outfit which up to then had a 100 percent record.

And in the closing weeks of the season, results like a 2-1 victory at runners-up Llannefydd and a double over Rhuddlan Town stood out.

Sports also made waves in knockout competitions too, perhaps their finest performance coming in the FAW Amateur Trophy, where they eliminated Tier 3 Llanfair United on penalties, Niall Owen netting the decider.

A 2-1 win at Llandyrnog United where Kazakhstan debutant Anuar Seilkhanov notched a 93rd minute clincher was also memorable.

Sports are a friendly club with great social media and a unique sense of humour – a credit to the North Wales Coast East League.

Here is a brief report on their final game of the 2022-23 season – a 2-0 victory at Rhuddlan Town.

Rhuddlan Town 0 Mochdre Sports 2

Late strikes from Anuar Seilkhanov and Scott Roberts secured an important three points in our final game of the season.

The first half was evenly contested with both teams creating numerous half chances but no clear cut openings to take us into the break at 0-0.

The second half began with Mochdre starting the better after Scott Brown was moved into a more central area of the pitch and his driving runs were causing problems for the Rhuddlan midfield.

Rhuddlan then came back into the game and both teams had chances to take the lead but poor finishing was the downfall for each.

With the game heading for a draw, Seilkhanov was played through by Josh Grimshaw, leaving the Kazakh to beat an on rushing goalkeeper on the edge of the area and pass into an empty net.

The 85th and final goal of our 2022/23 league campaign was a fantastic finish into the top left hand corner from Scott Roberts from a Jack Jeffers pass, a fitting way to round off the season.
