Nomads retain NEWFA Challenge Cup, league wins for Llangefni, Northop Hall and Pwllheli

Connah’s Quay Nomads women celebrate winning the 2022-23 NEWFA Challenge Cup

NEWFA Women’s Challenge Cup Final

Airbus UK Broughton 0
Connah’s Quay Nomads 3 (Hobbs 2, Ellis)

Nomads retained the North East Wales Challenge Cup but were given a good battle by local rivals Airbus at the Memorial Playing Fields, Ruthin.

The last leg of a North East Wales FA finals weekend, Shannon Hobbs broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, captain Kirstie Kural with the assist.

Two minutes later, Nomads were reduced to 10 players when defender Megan Andrews was shown a straight red card.

It took the Quay until the 63rd minute to strike again, Sienna Strapp setting up substitute Phoebe Ellis to calmly find the net.

Strapp was involved again, passing the ball to Hobbs, who clinched the cup by making it 3-0 on 84 minutes with a smart lob over a stranded keeper.

Airbus had their moments, Meg Robinson producing a marvellous stop from a Jade Scott free kick with the score at 2-0.

North Wales Women’s League reports – May 21, 2023

Llanfairfechan Town 0
Llangefni Town 9 (Cox 3, Thomas 2, J Jones 2, Coulson, Wood)

Jen Cox is now top-scorer in the league on 28 goals after her treble helped Llangefni end their season with an impressive 9-0 victory.

Cox has notched 30 goals in all competitions for a side which today rose up to third place – a vast improvement on last term.

Cefni could yet finish third, depending on other results over the closing matches.

Cox set the ball rolling at the Rec with a 19th minute opener from a Ffion Thomas assist.

Thomas herself doubled the lead four minutes later and then set up Cox for her second on 32.

There was still time for a second from Thomas, her 17th goal of a stunning season, which made it 4-0 at the break.

Three minutes into the second half, Cox completed yet another treble and made it six times she has netted three goals or more in a game this season.

Ellie Coulson then got in on the act with her 14th goal of the campaign, Hannah Owen assisting, to boost the lead to 6-0.

It was now the turn of young Jess Jones to come to the party with a quick double, knocking in a 71st minute penalty before adding another on 76 to make it seven goals in her last nine appearances.

Last but far from least came a very popular goal in the 84th minute.

Substitute Megan Wood made the most of a Jones assist to score her first goal for the club in just her third appearance of 2022-23.

Played: 22 Won 14 Drawn 2 Lost 6 Goal Difference +43 – what a fantastic effort from Dan Gregg and Liam Ewing’s side.

Amlwch Town 3 (E Jones 2, C Williams)
CPD Pwllheli 4 (B Roberts, M Owen, S Jones, L Thomas)

A seven-goal thriller turned on an injury to Amlwch keeper Ceri Pritchard which forced her off on 70 minutes with the home side leading 3-2.

Pwllheli then grabbed two late goals to clinch a seventh straight win to all but secure themselves runners-up spot.

Amlwch knew they were in for another tough test against a team with just 12 players but in great form.

The task for both sides was not made any easier by the heat.

Bess Roberts handed Pwllheli a 15th minute lead, but after 21 a lovely finish from Ellie Sian Jones made it 1-1.

The visitors made it hard for Amlwch to play their usual football through the middle and out to the wings. After a few corners Town finally capitalised when an Emma Roberts flag-kick found the head of Cara Williams, who made it 2-1 on 31.

Pwllheli responded strongly and an outstanding lob from Marsli Owen levelled the scores after 33.

However, Amlwch went in at half time leading after another fine effort from Ellie Jones – her 17th of the season – made it 3-2.

The second half proved hard going for Town and it was made more difficult when keeper Pritchard dislocated her elbow, meaning Jo Bramwell had to go in goal.

Pwllheli took advantage of this, Sioned Jones making it 3-3 before top-scorer Lois Thomas nabbed the winner.

Denbigh Town 1 (C Morris)
Northop Hall 3 (Holland, Jones, Gorecka)

Charlotte Morris’ first half goal had Denbigh ahead at the midway point, but the second 45 minutes saw Northop Hall take over.

Abbie Holland, Courtney-Jade Jones and Brygida Gorecka were all on target to earn the visitors a 3-1 victory.
