An amazing month for so many North Wales clubs – but who just about topped the rest?

Club of the Month for April 2023 – FC Queen’s Park

To win eight matches in a month, lift one cup and reach the final of another is quite a feat.

Take a bow FC Queen’s Park – the Grassroots North Wales Clwb y Mis/Club of the Month for Ebrill/April 2023.

Today saw the Park round off the month in style by beating Greenfield 3-1 in the Mike Beech Memorial Trophy Final, goals from Richard Jones, Jack Hanley and Callum Roberts getting them there.

Queen’s Park end April five points clear at the North East Wales League Premier Division summit and still have a Horace Wynne Cup Final to look forward to against Ruabon Rovers on May 19.

Success as a club sets the Park apart in April, their second team having won the Reserves Division title without losing a match, while the ‘golden oldies’ have reached the North East Wales Vets Cup Final.

The Reserves have made it to their divisional cup final, so are on course for a double when they meet Greenfield Reserves on May 7 at Brymbo.

FC Queen’s Park – first team results in April

These clubs were also outstanding in April……

St Asaph City

One down, two to go for Saints

On course for a treble and looking unstoppable.

Saints whipped Prestatyn Sports in the Cookson Cup Final 5-0 on April 26, have still got the NWCFA Intermediate Cup Final against Menai Bridge Tigers to play and need just one more victory from their last four games – although a point will probably be enough – to be crowned North Wales Coast East Premier Division champions.

In April it was played 7 won 7 for the tier 4 Roe Plas club.

Apr 8: Mochdre Sports (h – lge) 2-1

Kinmel Bay

What a turnaround for Kinmel Bay in April.

Seven league games played, seven wins, 36 goals scored and just 7 conceded.

That’s the form of champions, but so average was much that went before, 21 points out of a possible last 21 has only lifted them to seventh.

The goal-scoring of Connor Morris has been phenomenal. Kinmel will not want this season to end and surely cannot wait for the next to start.

Apr 25: Meliden (h – lge) 4-1

Llanrug United

Llanrug (red) take on Menai Bridge Tigers

We don’t often include teams who have lost a game during a month, but Llanrug must get a mention.

Since going down 3-2 at Menai Bridge in the Snowdonia Cup on April 1, United have avoided defeat in seven games.

These include great away wins at Llanberis and Gwalchmai in their six victories, with a handy draw at home to Menai Bridge also on the slate.

Llanrug United Reserves have also had a superb April in the North Wales Coast Reserves League, taking 13 points out of a possible 15.

April form
Apr 1: Menai Bridge Tigers (h – Snowdonia Cup) 2-3
Apr 5: Llanberis (a – lge) 3-2
Apr 8: Amlwch Town (a – lge) 3-1

Apr 29: Gwalchmai (a – lge) 4-0

Glantraeth

One of the most improved sides in North Wales, Glantraeth won six and drew one in an unbeaten April.

Victories at Pwllheli and Nefyn were especially admirable, helping the Anglesey side rise to fourth in the table.

April form
Apr 1: CPD Llannerchymedd (a – Snowdonia Cup) 5-2
Apr 5: CPD Aberffraw (h – lge) 2-1
Apr 8: Pwllheli (a – lge) 3-1

Six matches, six wins in April for the newly-crowned North Wales Coast West Division One champions.

That sextet of successes included 33 goals scored and just one conceded.

The squad includes North Wales top scorer Asa Thomas, now on 70 goals for the campaign.

Apr 8: CPD Cefni (a – lge) 3-1
Apr 15: Bethesda Rovers (a – lge) 6-0

Apr 22: CPD Mountain Rangers (a – lge) 7-0
Apr 29: Arriva (a – lge) 4-0

CPD Llannefydd

Without Llannefydd the tier 4 North Wales Coast East Premier Division title race would be over.

Six wins in as many matches in April have kept Gwyndaf Pritchard’s side in the hunt, although the championship is almost certainly heading to St Asaph.

Ruabon Rovers

Ruabon in action versus Caerwys. Picture: TIM ERASMUS

In seven matches during April, Ruabon have struck 57 GOALS, with the lethal Andrew Swarbrick and Conner Kendrick leading the way.

Not only have Rovers taken 16 points out of a possible 18 in the tier 5 North East Wales League Championship Division, keeping them well on course for the title, they also reached the Horace Wynne Cup Final courtesy of a stunning 5-4 triumph at Premier Division Lex.

Also into The Reserve Cup Final, where Gronant await on May 12, Ruabon are another great side pursuing a treble.
