Congratulations Conwy Comrades – the last-ever winners of the Rhyl and District Sunday League.

Today marked not only the title-decider and final game of the 2022-23 season, it also was the farewell match for the league, which is folding due to lack of teams and interest.

Comrades ended their unbeaten season in style by thrashing Rhyl’s Royal Oak in the winner-takes-all championship clincher.

Conwy took control early on with a wicked left-foot effort from Lee Stokes into the bottom-corner.

It was soon two when good feet from Dan Williams found his strike partner Callum Parry, who made no mistake.

Joe Jones (yellow and blue) had an outstanding season for Comrades

Joe Jones was awarded the third with a tap-in from a ball across the face of goal.

Just before half time Stokes made it four with a cross-come-shot.

Comrades made a lively start to the second half when the ball was whipped in by Stokes and headed home by Charlie Jones.

Joe Carey danced past three defenders and although the keeper tipped onto the bar, Dan Williams was on hand to make it 6-0.

Captain Kai Davies soon notched number seven with a slotted effort into the bottom corner.

A brilliantly worked goal from Oak saw Adam Cassidy finish left-footed to put the Rhyl team onto the scoreboard at least.

Carey’s persistence eventually paid off when he netted from close range to restore the seven-goal lead.

Ian Pattinson and captain Davies rounded off the scoring to bring up double figures.
