Tuesday night football – Wellmen hit six to reach cup semis

RESULTS – TUESDAY, FEB 28

NEWFA MEN’S SENIOR CHALLENGE CUP QUARTER-FINALS

Holywell Town 6 (Dave Forbes 3 & 22, Kai Wallis 10, Aidan Farren 64, Mark Winslade 78 & 87)
Brickfield Rangers 0

Report: Stere Roberts

Dave Forbes and Mark Winslade both netted twice as Holywell stormed into the NEWFA Challenge Cup semi-finals at the expense of Brickfield from a league below.

On a bitterly cold night, the Wellmen had a dream start. Jake Cooke burst down the wing and got to the byline, his low cross hit keeper’s Joe Lawlor’s legs and the ball rebounded off the post to the unmarked Forbes, who tapped home to give Town a third-minute lead.

In the 10th minute, Holywell doubled their total. Kai Wallis burst forward, his fierce shot hit the post and rebounded out and despite the efforts of the backtracking defender, he was only able to find his own net.

It became 3-0 on 22 minutes. Cooke was fouled and from the Danny Andrews free kick, Forbes nodded in at the far post.

The visitors were reduced to 10 midway through the half as captain Ben Pritchard saw red for a challenge on Cooke.

Early in the second half, Wallis was denied by Lawlor and Gerson Neto had a chance for Bricky in a one-on-one, but keeper Mike Platt denied him.

The Wellmen grabbed a fourth on 64 when Aidan Farren turned in a cross from the right, then Winslade notched his first and Holywell’s fifth.

A great ball into the box by Andrews set up Winslade for number six.

Ruthin Town 1 (Ethan Davies 52)
FC Queen’s Park 0

Ethan Davies scored the only goal seven minutes into the second half as Ruthin joined Holywell in the semis with a narrow win over a battling Queen’s Park from two leagues below.

Gresford Athletic 0

First-half goals from Joe Chaplin and Sam Jones clinched the victory for Llandudno.

Chaplin broke the deadlock on 23 minutes with a great strike into the top-left corner.

Gresford missed a great chance through Sam Spridgeon before Sam Jones bagged a home second on 34 with a tidy finish.

In the second half, Tudno debutant keeper Richard Cowderoy produced a couple of great stops, while Morgan Owen hit the post with a stinging drive for the hosts.
