More Mummery Memories – another reflection on the day Llanfairpwll tamed Kidderminster’s terror trio in cup

Yesterday we looked back on perhaps the greatest performance in CPD Llanfairpwll’s history – a 2-1 Welsh Cup win at mighty Football Conference outfit Kidderminster Harriers in the 1980’s.

We featured the game in honour of Alun Wyn Mummery, the long-serving Llanfairpwll secretary, who sadly passed away last week at the age of 80.

More information has come to light on the Kidderminster tie which saw the pride of Anglesey pull off a phenomenal result, considering the strength of the Harriers side of the time.

Kidderminster’s team of 1986-87 contained all three members of a sensational attacking trio which terrorised the top non-league tier Alliance (Conference) in the 1980s.

Kim Casey, Paul Davies and Mick Tuohy have gone down in legend at Aggborough, largely thanks to a remarkable 1985-86 campaign that yielded a combined total of 139 goals.

Tuohy got 22. Davies 44. And Casey – who nominally played on the right wing – bagged a hard-to-believe 73 goals in 68 matches.

Pioneering manager Graham Allner’s gung-ho philosophy of a constant three-man attack and not too much emphasis on clean sheets made Kiddy a thrilling side to watch.

They utilised a 4-3-3 high-press long before Liverpool claimed it as their own under Jurgen Klopp.

The Harriers were pretty prolific in the “goals for” department in 1986-87 too, but only managed one against Welsh Alliance League hopefuls Llanfairpwll at a foggy Aggborough on November 29, 1986.

At a time when English sides were still permitted to enter the Welsh Cup, Kiddy had been beaten finalists against Football League outfit Wrexham the season before.

The likes of Allan Jones, Gwynne Davies, Colin Jones and Andy Roberts had the job of keeping Casey, Paul Davies and Tuohy in check – and they did a great job.

The North Wales side led 1-0 at half time thanks to a goal from Phil Holland.

Early in the second half, Casey levelled, but Llanfair would not be denied, David Owen firing the 72nd minute winner past future 50-times capped Wales, Wolves and Southampton keeper Paul Jones.

The islanders also had Colin Redmayne sent off for time-wasting, but Bryan Owen’s heroes held on for a magical victory.

To put Llanfair’s success into perspective, consider this. Kidderminster Harriers won the FA Trophy later that same season, defeating Burton Albion 2-1 in the final at The Hawthorns, Davies netting both goals.
