Thanks for the Mummerys – recalling some of Llanfairpwll’s most memorable games from club legend Alun’s era

Alun Wyn Mummery enjoyed countless highlights during a long association with Llanfairpwll Football Club which dated back to 1959.

After spells with Bangor City in the 1960s and 70s, he returned to Llanfair as secretary in 1980-81 and remained the Ynys Môn club’s most renowned figurehead, respected and loved far and wide, until he passed away this week at the age of 80.

Here, Grassroots North Wales reflects on some of the most special occasions Alun shared with Llanfairpwll. Others articles will follow, if and when we can gather them.

Welsh Cup third round – 1986-87

This was probably the greatest result in CPD Llanfairpwll’s history.

The previous season, Kidderminster had reached the Welsh Cup final, losing 2-1 to Wrexham after a replay.

In 1986-87, Harriers were to finish 12th in the Football Conference, just one level below the Football League.

They also lifted the FA Trophy, beating Burton Albion 2-1 in the final following a replay.

In the Welsh Cup, however, they came a cropper against a team of Anglesey heroes.

Their top scorer the season prior was the remarkable Kim Casey who amassed 73 goals in 68 games.

Casey was in the Kiddy side which welcomed Llanfairpwll of the Welsh Alliance League to Aggborough in November 1986 for a Welsh Cup third round tussle.

Although the Welsh Alliance was the highest standard North Wales clubs not in the English pyramid could play in at that time, Bryan Owen’s islanders were still massive underdogs on that evening in Worcestershire.

Perhaps predictably, Casey scored for the Harriers, but goals from Phil Holland and Dave Owen sent Llanfairpwll through to the next round with a 2-1 win. Colin Redmayne was sent off for time-wasting and the crowd was 705 at a foggy Aggborough.

In the next round, the last 16, Llanfairpwll lost 3-1 at home to Aberystwyth Town, but what they had achieved against the FA Trophy winners of that 1986-87 campaign would never be forgotten, especially by their charismatic secretary Alun Mummery.
