Result: Newport won by 10 wickets
Despite producing a decent batting effort Northop were no match for their South Wales hosts in today’s Welsh Cup quarter-final at Spytty Park.
The North Wales League visitors won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 192-6 off 40 overs.
Wicket-keeper Richard Walker hit an excellent 72 off 74 balls, including eight fours and a six, while skipper Bart Ryan-Beswick added 35.
Walker and Thomas Hughes (22) put on 56 for the second wicket, then the keeper added another 60 with Ben Beaver (23).
Mujahid Ilyas was Newport’s more successful bowler with 3-44.
In reply, the home side’s openers Tom Evans and skipper Michael Clayden were in unstoppable form.
The pair put on an unbroken 193 in just 28.2 overs to seal a 10-wicket triumph.
Evans ended on 91 not out and Clayden finished unbeaten on 82.
North Wales’ last hope in this year’s Welsh Cup is Colwyn Bay, who host Pontarddulais next Sunday for a place in the semis.
