Dave Davies of Denbigh is a new national darts champion!

Meet Denbigh’s latest darting sensation – David Davies

Report: David Cooke

North Wales has a new national darts champion.

Clwyd County ace Dave Davies of Denbigh scooped the ADC Welsh national title at the Atherton Botanical Gardens, Manchester on Friday evening.

The ADC organisation (Amateur Darts Circuit) has become an integral part in grassroots and amateur darts since the sad loss of the BDO system and with the Welsh title being vacated by Jim Williams, who entered the PDC professional tour in early 2022, there was a chance to pit two hopefuls against each other.

Davies has been in a rich vein of form recently and currently leads the North Wales ADC rankings after Open wins in Rhyl and Penyffordd and accumulating more ranking points with latter stage placings in several other local tournaments.

His opponent was to be South Walian Robert ‘Stack Attack’ Owen, a player with an eye-catching darting CV including professional experience on the PDC tour and a major semi-final placing in the 2018 UK Open were he was defeated by Australia Corey Cadby, who went on to lose 11-7 to Gary Anderson in the final.

Billed as the main event of the evening at the ADC’s first Undisputed event of 2022, many had touted Owen as a firm favourite after his recent form in the Modus Online live league and previous darting achievements.

However, Denbigh man Davies has been building a fantastic local reputation of late and his good form continued with a scintillating showing of power scoring to steamroll to an emphatic 8-1 victory which included three 180’s and a brilliant 13-dart leg to take the national title with a fine 93.73 three-dart average.

So what next for the former Llandyrnog United, Trefnant Village and Denbigh footballer, with an organisation which encourages players to throw their hat on the oche and challenge its national and regional champions.

Potentially a rematch could be organised with Robert Owen, or will it be the last ever BDO Lakeside champion Glamorgan’s Wayne Warren?

Perhaps a tasty encounter with county team mate and World Dart Federation ranked Mike Warburton of Wrexham is on the cards?

Or how about a mouthwatering tie with fellow Denbigh player the Former BDO World champion and PDC ace Mark Webster.
