Five goals from Corrig McGonigle against his old club took his total for Bangor 1876 to 29 in 11 games as the North Wales Coast West Premier Division runners-up dished out a Bank Holiday Monday caning at Bryniau Field.

McGonigle, who hit 64 goals for Pentraeth in 2015/16 before signing for Glantraeth, was in deadly form again for his new club 1876, for whom he has now knocked in six hat-tricks since joining in February, including an eight, a five and a four.

Today’s first goal arrived shortly before the quarter-hour when Joe Culshaw headed in a Sion Edwards corner.

Within a minute, the hosts had a chance to get back on level terms when striker Kian Abbott found himself clean through on goal. However, Cian Thomas got out well to make the save.

Just after the half hour, 1876 doubled their advantage when Harry Galeotti cut the ball back from the right to allow McGonigle to net his 25th goal for the club.

Three minutes later McGonigle added another in similar fashion after Sion Edwards played the ball back to him from the byline on the left. With three minutes of the opening period left McGonigle completed another hat-trick when he was again set up by Edwards and scored from close range.

Five minutes after the break, McGonigle added his fourth after another Edwards cross.

Midway through the second period, Edwards provided his fifth assist when his through ball allowed Galeotti to break into the penalty area and lob home goalkeeper Dean Corbett Brown.

With just over 20 minutes left, Shaun Lock picked up a second yellow card and became only the second 1876 player to be sent off.

Pentraeth sought to capitalise on their numerical advantage but Cian Thomas pulled off some excellent saves to repel their efforts.

Indeed, it was Bangor 1876 who scored next when Sion Edwards netted direct from a free-kick.

However, hosts Pentraeth got on the scoresheet themselves two minutes later when right back Dyfed Alston broke into the right side of the penalty area and finished well.

With the clock ticking down, McGonigle added his fifth and 1876’s eighth when he beat Corbett Brown after the ball was headed into his path by Michael Johnston.

1876 now have two home games at Treborth to look forward to. They conclude their league campaign at home to Bodedern on Saturday 7 May (2.30pm) before playing Pwllheli in the League Cup on Friday 13 May (7.30pm).
