With Chirk Town resigning from the North East Wales Football League so late in the season, Greenfield are now clear favourites to lift the Premier Division title.
In the Tier 5 Championship Division, meanwhile, Penyffordd Lions and Connah’s Quay Nomads are embroiled in a thrilling end-of-season battle to finish top which is due to reach the ultimate showdown on May 14 – against each other.
Greenfield moved to within one win of the league title with a hard-fought success at Tower Field on Saturday.
Goals from Lewis Williams, Dean Hyland and Connor Hughes handed the visitors a 3-0 half time lead, but in-form Llangollen battled back in the second period to score through Rupeni Thorn and Jake Hayward.
Both sides had a player sent off – Greenfield’s Danny Calvert was shown a red on 38 minutes and Meuryn Hughes picked up a second yellow for the hosts after 73.
Charlie Hughes’ 92nd minute decider clinched the win that keeps Mountain’s title hopes just about alive.
Jared Jones put Villa ahead from the penalty spot, but Alister Gibson levelled on 13 minutes.
Lee Messham edged the hosts in front on the hour only for Jack Heppleston to level after 62 minutes.
Then came that dramatic ending with the master of the late goal, Hughes, striking again.
Lewis Parry delivered a four-goal salvo in an emphatic win for Rangers.
A Jason Edwards own goal, Rueben McCorry and Matthew Tombs made up for the seven for the visitors, Joshua Betteley and Finley Dyer replying for the Lawmen.
Craig Worthington notched a match-winning hat-trick for the visitors, his goals arriving on 10, 38 and 84 minutes.
Marcus Davies scored three times for a Penyffordd side which remain top of the table on goal difference.
Davies found the net on 19, 68 and 88 minutes, with Ben Hughes also on the mark for the visitors.
Top two Lions and Connah’s Quay Town are level on points with one game each left to play – against each other at Penyffordd on May 14.
Lee Reynolds, Ryan Hewitt, John Coady and Ben Howarth shared the goals as Town kept their title hopes on the boil and clinched a promotion place at the expense of Ruabon.
The issue of who goes up will remain in the balance until the make up of the league for next season is decided. Ground inspections are also yet to be carried out.
No stopping Ruthin Town’s development side in this one, Robert Jones (2), Jake Roberts, George Mitchell, Lewis Lloyd-Hughes and Josh Tempest combining to produce six away goals.
