Ardal North East – Six of the best from Chirk AAA and Rhos Aelwyd, Albion concede late equaliser

Rhos began their 2022 league campaign in some style with a six-goal demolition of Kerry on Saturday.

Aelwyd’s previous Ardal North East game was quite an occasion as they beat leaders Chirk AAA 2-1 on December 18. Saturday’s assignment was far more comfortable.

James Rumsey broke the deadlock on 27 minutes and Scott Reeves made it 2-0 before half time.

In the second half, Tom Smith, Daniel Roberts and Ian Hughes added further home goals before Rumsey completed his brace in the 87th minute.

An added bonus for Rhos was seeing club captain Aled Robertson back on the field after a lengthy absence through injury.

Cefn Albion 1 (Latham pen 33)
Caersws 1 (Mumford 90)

Matthew Mumford’s last-minute equaliser denied Albion maximum points from Saturday’s tussle at Clywedog Park.

Michael Latham put Cefn in front from the penalty spot on 33 minutes, but just before half time the hosts had Torne Samuels sent off for a second yellow.

Ten-man Albion looked like they would hold on for the win until Bluebirds skipper Mumford made it one-apiece in stoppage time.

Machynlleth 0
Chirk AAA 6 (MacCarter 5 & 15, Edwards 66, Sklenar 68, Middlehurst 80, Rogers 90+4)

The visitors bounced back from the previous weekend’s NEWFA Challenge Cup loss to Chirk Town by putting six past Machynlleth – a result which secured a return to the league summit for Andy Pryde’s men.

Leading the way was new signing Jordan MacCarter, with a two-goal blast in the opening 15 minutes.

Jack Edwards made it three on 66.

Chirk’s late substitutes took advantage of Mach’s tiring legs with Liam Sklenar, Louie Middlehurst and James Rogers scoring in the last 20 minutes.

A big win for The Colliers and some excellent performances from the new boys.

Man of the match was Lewis Clamp.

Penparcau 2 (Davies 11, Carree 90+2)
Corwen 0

A second straight 2-0 away defeat for Corwen to kick off their 2022 league fixtures.

Penparcau showed they meant business early on, as in the fourth minute a goalbound effort looked in all the way, but goalkeeper Nathan Roberts stretched to pull off a great save.

In the 11th minute the ball was played into the Corwen box, where it was held up before being played back to Matthew Davies, who hit a low first-time shot just beyond Roberts to open the scoring.

The away side looked for an instant response as Charlie Parkinson launched the ball forward from a free kick, but Harry Pooler’s header sailed narrowly over the bar.

Pen hit back when Liam Jaques rounded off a long run by unleashing a shot which clipped the post and rebounded into the path of Liam Lewis, whose follow-up snicked the bar.

Just before the half-hour a high ball was played forward by Corwen, prompting Stefano Antoniazzi to leap into the air, but he missed it completely, forcing Pen keeper Lewis James to come off his line to collect.

However, the glovesman spilled the ball, leading to a mad dash to be first to get to it. James won the race and prevented a calamitous goal.

Davies twice forced fine saves from Corwen’s Roberts early in the second half before the keeper also performed marvels to keep out a Jaques header.

Despite being under the cosh for the majority of the second half the visitors looked for an equaliser in the closing stages, debutant Tomos Hughes’ shot being cleared.

It was match point to the home side in the first minute of stoppage time as substitute Andrew Carree, who looked initially as if he may have been offside, must have timed his run correctly, as he fired the ball home.

Dolgellau AA 1 (Evans 20)
Four Crosses 1 (Clarke 90+4)

Well done bottom side Four Crosses – just a second point of the season in their 21st game.

Gethin Evans’ 20th minute goal looked to be enough to secure Dolgellau a narrow win, but four minutes into stoppage time Billy Clarke plundered an equaliser for the Foxen Manor crew, who had lost 18 on the bounce since drawing 1-1 with Penycae in their second fixture of the campaign.
