Top-scorer Benn Lundstram began 2022 in awesome fashion as he plundered a hat-trick in Mally’s six-goal success at The Alex.
Playing their first match in five weeks, the Junction side travelled knowing only wins from here on in will be good enough if they are to retain the Rhyl and District Sunday League title.
Today’s game started slowly in windy conditions with both teams trying to find their feet.
Mally took the lead midway through the first half with a screamer from Ricky Jones.
Lundstram was then fouled in the area to win a penalty which he converted for 2-0.
The lively Lundstram soon doubled his tally when he finished brilliantly low into the corner following a great flowing move. Half time 3-0.
The second half started pretty much in the same pattern as the first before Lundstram completed his hat-trick on the hour mark and made it 13 goals for the season to move top of the league hotshots chart.
Kyle Robb deservedly got himself on the scoresheet as reward for his excellent display and James Hobson rounded off the scoring when his great first touch and hit on the turn found a way through the keeper’s legs and into the net.
Nic Bould made two smart saves to maintain the clean sheet for the Junction side.

Jamie Haggas banged in a treble as Comrades’ first game of the new year saw them produce a much-needed victory.
A tough contest against an in-form Bar Bow went 30 minutes with no goals before Haggas broke the deadlock with a brilliant left-footed finish.
Into the second half and the hosts continued to push on for another goal to give them breathing space.
Haggas was soon there again to make it two.
Bar Bow had a few chances but good saves from Owen Booth kept them at bay. Rob Gore made it 3-0 before shortly after Haggas completed his hat-trick and sealed the win.
Rhyl-based Millbank returned to the summit after a five-goal show at home to Wanderers.
Lewis Lacurti opened the scoring with a goal on his debut, finishing from a Joel Poh cutback.
The lead was doubled when Jack Davies’ fierce effort came back off the post and Aidan Bell’s powerful strike from the rebound found the net.
Before the break, Bell worked his way past a defender and set Ash Randles for number three.
A Nathan Jones clearance off the goal-line denied the visitors a reply before half time.
Wanderers reduced the arrears after the interval when a Will Smith free kick gave keeper Ben Spencer no chance.
Any hopes of a comeback for the losing side ended when Ben Edge’s pinpoint cross enabled Jordan Cemaloglu to make it 4-1.
Jack Davies added a deserved goal before the end, robbing a defender and smashing home from 20 yards.
