Bangor 1876 eye a return to top spot in North Wales Women’s League

Just two matches take place this weekend – both in the North Wales Women’s League.

There are no games scheduled for the tier 2 Genero Adran North, where the next fixture is planned for next Tuesday (December 7) when Llandudno visit Denbigh Town.

NORTH WALES WOMEN’S LEAGUE

Bangor 1876 v Holywell

Jonny Batten’s 1876 side will return to the top of the league if they beat bottom team Holywell.

Bangor have lost just the once this season, to current leaders CPD Y Rhyl 1879, and have won their other six fixtures.

While missing key goalscorers, the squad does possess a number of players who can find the net, so it could be a difficult afternoon for Holywell.

The Wellwomen have drawn one and lost five of their six outings to date. They gained their first ever point from a 2-2 outcome against Trearddur Bay, a game in which the Flintshire side led 2-0.

Unfortunately, Holywell have had six points deducted so currently stand on minus five.

Nonetheless, this is an enthusiastic bunch who are steadily improving and possess talented and experienced players such as Zoe Stopford, Sarah Massey and Caitlin Latham.

Llanystumdwy v Trearddur Bay

Newcomers Llanystumdwy have already made massive strides since losing their opening game of the campaign 12-0 at Bangor 1876.

The Parc Dwyfor side have gained wins over Northop Hall (3-2) and Holywell Town (7-2) as well as pushing Amlwch Town (1-2) and Welshpool Town (2-3) all the way in narrow defeats.

Grace Mpuku, Hana Wellings and supermum-of-eight Sarah O’Hara are among those to impress in front of goal for Llan, who also have an experienced keeper in Sara Lacey and quality defender in Tash Matthews.

In fact, everywhere you look in the squad there is ability and promise.

Trearddur Bay are coming off the back of a 12-0 defeat at leaders Rhyl 1879, but even in that game the Anglesey girls, who were missing numerous regulars, showed plenty of fighting spirit.

Manager Chris Davies hopes to have one or two important names back from injury this weekend, although there could be problems in the goalkeeping department if Georgia Magee is ruled out with a damaged rib.

Bay have picked up one point so far, from a 2-2 split with Holywell, and also lost three points after their opening day 7-1 victory over Caernarfon Town was declared void following the Cofis’ withdrawal from the league.
