It was a case of unlucky 13 for Chirk as they lost their 100 percent league record after Penycae picked up an unexpected point at Holyhead Road.

The Colliers’ lead at the Ardal North East summit was cut to three points as their run of 12 successive wins since the start of the season came to an end at the 13th hurdle.

It was a good, defensive performance from the visitors and Chirk found themselves two down after 54 minutes, but forced themselves level and will be disappointed after missing some glorious chances to win the game late on.

A minute’s silence was impeccably observed prior to the game in memory of one of Chirk’s top supporters Wendy Ellis, who sadly passed recently.

Chirk dominated early on but could not find a way past the stubborn Cae defence and it looked ominous for the hosts when Adam Williams missed a penalty on 37 minutes.

Cae took the lead minutes later when young defender Jac Scott rose unchallenged at the far post to head in a corner.

It got worse for Chirk on 54 minutes when Evan Woodall scored a great solo goal to put the away side two goals ahead. He cut in from the left, beating three defenders before curling an unstoppable shot past Zac Bebbington.

Chirk were stunned but reacted positively and Ryan Williams put them back into it when minutes later he stormed into the box before firing low past Stuart Williams.

The leaders continued to press for the equaliser and it was not long coming when Dale Davies fired them level on 66 minutes.

Chirk continued their barrage but could not find another goal and Penycae to their credit defended stubbornly with their young striker, substitute Brandon Edwards, giving the Colliers a few problems on the breakaway.

Chirk will be disappointed to have lost their 100% record but after being two goals down, will be glad to have come away with the draw.

Two difficult away games to come over the next fortnight with Dolgellau and Llanfair United on the horizon.

It certainly tightened things up at the top of the league with nearest challengers Cefn Albion, Llanfair and Caersws all winning on Saturday.

Corwen’s difficulties at their enforced temporary adopted home of Maes Tegid continued as they lost for a third time in five league games at the Bala 3G.

With seven minutes gone Rhos Aelwyd took the lead when a pinpoint cross was played into the box and Thomas Smith headed home.

After 32 minutes a Rhos counter saw referee John Spender play advantage after a foul, which allowed Daniel Roberts to find the roof of the net from the edge of the box to double his side’s advantage.

The away team made it 3-0 five minutes later when Scott Reeves found space and slotted home.

Five minutes before the break Rhos hit Corwen with a lightning quick move which came to an end when Daniel Roberts just about stayed onside and got through on goal where he finished to extend the Aelwyd’s tally.

Two minutes after the restart Corwen put together a great move. Scott Evans played a fine cross into the 18-yard box, where Jack O’Neill fired in to give the hosts a glimmer of hope.

The visitors restored their four-goal advantage when they won the ball in midfield and found Smith, who hit a low-angled shot in at the far post.

Tom Williams provided an assist on 70 minutes when he teed up O’Neill to score his second for Corwen, but that was the end of the goals.

REST OF THE LEAGUE

Cefn Albion are second on goal difference after a 4-0 home win against Carno.

Jimmy Jones and substitute Alex Williams both scored two apiece for the Cefners.

Mike Straw’s 84th minute goal secured Machynlleth an excellent 1-0 victory at Bow Street.

Mach keeper Thomas Jenkins was another hero as he kept out a 67th minute Sion Ewart penalty.

Penparcau made it three wins on the bounce, Anthony Evans’ 75th minute strike proving enough to pip Dolgellau Athletic 1-0.

Fourth-place Caersws romped to an 8-2 triumph at Four Crosses.

Jake Parr bagged himself a hat trick with Glyn Coney getting a brace. Further goals came from Neil Mitchell, Luke Mumford and Luke Evans, Will Howard and Chris Dyke responding.

Ryan Knott (2), Adam Knott, Josh Lenc and Luke Thomas guided Welshpool Town to a 5-2 result at Kerry, Daryl McWatt and Ethan Holloway hitting back for the Lambs.

Edward Brittleton was red carded for the visitors on 65 minutes.

Llanfair United maintained their close contact with the leading pack after seeing off Berriew 5-3 – but they had to overcome a two-goal interval deficit to seal the points.

Max McLaughlin (2), Josh Astley, Nyasha Mwamuka and Ryan McVeagh split the home haul, Jack Williams and Drew Cook (2) handing the visitors a 3-1 half time lead.
