Marc Limbert celebrates Welsh Cup success with Bangor City

Happy birthday Marc Limbert – a true Welsh Premier League great.

Born on October 3, 1973, the five-time Welsh Cup winner and twice WPL champion is 48 today.

Although he played professionally for Chester City, the man affectionately known as Limbo is probably most renowned for his successes with Bangor City and Rhyl.

A good old-fashioned right-winger, he was respected and feared for his ball-trickery, superb passing and crossing and outstanding shooting.

Limbert began his career as a trainee with Everton, but was released without making the first team.

He joined Chester City, where he was to gain experience in the Football League by playing 14 league games in the 1992–93 season.

On leaving Chester a year later he joined Connah’s Quay Nomads and then played for Altrincham, leaving to join Colwyn Bay in July 1997.

While with the Bay, he won the NWCFA Challenge Cup and represented the Seagulls in the FA Cup.

He subsequently had a brief spell with TNS before joining Rhyl in May 2003 having played on dual terms for the Lilywhites at the latter end of the previous season.

Limbo was a key part of the dynamic Rhyl side which won a quadruple of Welsh Premier title, Welsh Cup. League Cup and NWCFA Challenge Cup in 2003-04.

In 2005-06, he was again involved with Rhyl’s Welsh Cup winners.

He re-joined Connah’s Quay Nomads in 2006, but stayed for just the one season, following manager Neville Powell to Bangor City in June 2007.

Limbo was immediately made captain at Farrar Road, and lifted the Welsh Cup in May 2008, scoring a penalty in extra-time in a 4-2 win against Llanelli AFC at Newtown’s Latham Park.

He was also in the 2009 and 2010 Welsh Cup winning squads with City, as well as the 2010-11 Welsh Premier title-lifting side.

The right-winger also played European football while at Rhyl and Bangor.

Limbo had a penchant for scoring stunning goals, surely the best being his instinctive halfway-line effort for Rhyl against Aberystwyth in the Lilywhites’ amazing 2003/04 season.

A great player, a tremendous character and a massive part of Rhyl and Bangor City’s golden periods under the managership of John Hulse and Neville Powell respectively.
