Grassroots North Wales chooses 10 of the Nomads’ finest performances under Andy Morrison

1 Kilmarnock 0 Connah’s Quay Nomads 2 (Europa League – July 18, 2019)

Nomads have achieved so many fabulous results under Andy Morrison’s management, but surely this was the best.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg against the SPL side, the Cymru Premier underdogs turned the tide at Rugby Park, second-half goals from Ryan Wignall and Callum Morris (penalty) securing a 2-0 win and 3-2 aggregate success.

2 The New Saints 1 Connah’s Quay Nomads 4 (Cymru Premier – April 24, 2021)

Mike Wilde proved he is the No 1 finisher in the Cymru Premier with a first-half hat-trick as Nomads took a major step towards a second successive title by thrashing TNS on their own Park Hall pitch.

Jamie Insall also netted for the Quay in a game which manager Morrison cited as a major factor in his team finishing up champions.

3 Stabæk 0 Connah’s Quay Nomads 1 (Europa League – July 7, 2016)

Nomads were outstanding winners in their first-ever European tie, beating Stabæk of Norway with a 1-0 away victory following a 0-0 home draw.

The result marked the first time in 24 years and 214 games that a Welsh side involved in European competition had kept two clean sheets across the two legs of a European tie.

Callum Morris scored the all-important decisive goal.

4 Connah’s Quay Nomads 4 Prishtina 2 (Europa Conference League – July 29, 2021)

Losing the first leg 4-1 in Kosovo meant the Nomads had left themselves just too much to do.

What a fantastic effort, though, to win the return leg 4-2 at home and so nearly force a penalty shoot-out.

Jamie Insall (2) George Horan and Jordan Davies ensured Nomads went so close.

5 Connah’s Quay Nomads 1 Airbus 0 (Europa Play-Off – May 14, 2016)

In his debut season in charge, Andy Morrison led Nomads into Europe for the first time in the club’s history.

Wes Baynes scored the only goal of the game with 11 minutes left to secure victory for the Deesiders over Airbus in the Europa Play-Off Final.

6 Connah’s Quay Nomads 4 Aberystwyth Town 1 (Welsh Cup final – May 6, 2018)

Nomads won the Welsh Cup for the first time in their history.

Michael Bakare put Andy Morrison’s men ahead before Michael Wilde added a brace.

Ryan Wade’s looping header on the stroke of half-time gave Aberystwyth hope, but Andy Owens sealed it for Nomads late on.

7 Connah’s Quay Nomads 1 HJK Helsinki 0 (Europa League – June 29, 2017)

A stunning win for the Nomads over top class Finnish outfit HJK at Nantporth, Bangor.

Nathan Woolfe bagged the 40th minute winner for Morrison’s heroes.

Unfortunately, the Quay lost the away leg 3-0.

8 Bangor City 1 Connah’s Quay Nomads 6 (Welsh Cup semi-final – April 7, 2018)

What a ruthless display this was from the Nomads at Belle Vue, Rhyl.

Andy Owens bagged a hat-trick for the Deesiders, Ryan Wignall, Michael Bakare and Nathan Woolfe adding one apiece in one of Quay’s finest attacking performances under Morrison.

9 Falkirk 0 Connah’s Quay Nomads 1 (Irn-Bru Cup – Sep 8, 2018)

A famous victory in Scotland for the Nomads in only their second-ever Irn-Bru Cup tie.

The Scottish Championship hosts were expected to win, but Michael Wilde’s 46th minute diving header upset the script.

Nomads went all the way to the final only to lose to Ross County.

10 Queen’s Park 1 Connah’s Quay Nomads 2 (Irn-Bru Cup – Nov 16, 2018)

A tremendous occasion for Nomads as two late goals overcame the challenge of their Scottish opponents at Hampden Park.

Lewis Hawke put Queen’s Park ahead on 64, but George Horan and Michael Wilde both scored in the last 10 minutes to seal the Cymru Premier visitors a memorable victory.

The game will be partly remembered for the less than complimentary remarks made by Queen’s Park goalkeeper Jordan Hart about Nomads’ style of play after the match. Sore loser.
