Wales international Harry Wilson supports campaign to get Corwen Football Club back home

Wales international Harry Wilson has added support to a campaign to get his hometown football club back playing at their home ground.

Fulham midfielder Wilson, a former Liverpool player, put out a message on social media today expressing sadness that Corwen FC have been forced to stop using the War Memorial Park for matches and instead host games at Maes Tegid, Bala, more than 11 miles away, for the rest of the season.

The football club have reportedly been told by the town council they cannot have access to the full facilities to the pavilion at the War Memorial Park.

This means the tier 3 Ardal North East outfit are unable to meet the criteria for their league laid down by the Football Association of Wales.

Since the news emerged of Corwen’s plight, numerous supporters have launched protest petitions on line.

Wilson, 24, who was born in Wrexham but is a Corwen lad through and through, said the following on social media today: “It is sad to hear that my home town club @CorwenFC have been forced to move their games away from ‘the rec’ due to matters beyond their control.

“I have regularly enjoyed going to watch the team play there throughout my life and I hope it isn’t too long until I can do so again.”

Capped 31 times for his country, in October 2013, Wilson became the youngest player to play for Wales, at the age of 16 years and 207 days, beating a record previously held by Gareth Bale.

He featured in just one first-team game for Liverpool, where he was a youth player between 2005-15 before signing a professional contract. He made his debut for the club on 18 January 2017, in a 1–0 away win over Plymouth Argyle in an FA Cup third round replay, replacing Philippe Coutinho in the 65th minute.

Spells on loan at Crewe Alexandra, Hull City, Derby County, AFC Bournemouth and Cardiff City followed before he signed a permanent deal at Championship club Fulham in July this year.

Wilson, a former pupil at Ysgol Dinas Bran, Llangollen, has made 132 appearances across the Premier League, Championship and League One, scoring 39 goals.
