Kieran Fritter put Llangoed in front. but Jones-Evans equalised and then completed his treble on 70 minutes.
Joseph Doohan made it 3-3 in the 76th minute, but Connor Roberts provided an 82nd minute winner.
Aelwyd came out with intent and caught Gresford napping as they raced in front with smart finish by James Haynes after five minutes on the clock.
Rhos stayed on the front foot after that until Gresford’s tricky winger Rhys Lloyd got through on goal and equalised after 25 minutes.
Before half time, poor defending from the hosts allowed Matthew Thompson to make it 2-1.
Athletic dictated most of the second half, while Rhos worked hard to stay in the game. Aelwyd tried make the most of set pieces but Gresford defended well.
With 20 minutes left. there was a suspicion of offside as Lloyd made it 3-1.
A sporting Rhos said afterwards: “No complaints, (Gresford) better, well-drilled side. Lads (will) dust themselves off and go again Saturday against Penycae.”
