REPORT: Iwan Jones
Visitors Denbigh fought back from two goals down to earn a point from this Vale of Clwyd derby at the Memorial Playing Fields.
The home team went ahead on 24 minutes despite some heroic efforts from Igor Jonczyk in Denbigh’s goal after he made two great saves only for Ruthin’s Alun Vaughan Evans to fire in a rebound.
Six minutes later and Ruthin were two up after Owen McKee capitalised on a mistake at the back to coolly slot the ball into an unguarded net.
Denbigh regrouped and just before half time, captain Matty Blake sent in a pin-point cross onto the head of Mark Roberts who headed home to make it 2-1.
The away team’s performance improved in the second half, and they had good spells in charge of the game.
The heavens opened and the downpour meant the tackles started coming in thick and fast as the game’s intensity went up a notch.
Denbigh’s pressure on the Ruthin goal paid off in the 71st minute when Owen Heath sent in a great cross from the right wing which eventually fell to the feet of Ciaran Lucas who blasted the ball home from 18 yards.
As the game approached its final minutes chances fell to both teams, but neither were able to get that winning goal.
Special mention to Oli Lennon, who went in goal in the second half for Ruthin as a replacement for the injured Dan Goldston and did a solid job.
