Goals from Callum Parry, Leon Doran, Deian Parry and Alex Jones led Hotspur to an impressive pre-season win over 1876 on Tuesday night.

Former Hotspur player Tom Clarke replied for the visitors.

Home team manager Darren Garmey was happy with the outcome, although a couple of injuries left cause for concern.

“We are pleased again with the performance,” he said. “We are now seeing the squad gelling and relationships forming all over the pitch which is great to see. Tonight we played a very good side and again the pace of the game was relentless.

“Unfortunately we suffered a couple of injuries which put a downer on the night, but we hope they are not as serious as first feared.”

The hosts started brightly and took the lead on seven minutes when Deian Parry broke into the middle of the penalty area and rounded the keeper before rolling the ball into the empty net.

Hotspur doubled their advantage four minutes later when a shot from the edge of the penalty area by Leon Doran eluded the trialist goalkeeper.

As the first half progressed, 1876 grew into the game and started to create more chances. On 27 minutes, Chris Jones was clean through on goal against his former club but was denied by a point-blank save from home goalkeeper Paul Pritchard.

However, from the resultant corner, Clarke reduced the deficit when he side-footed the ball home at the back post.

An equaliser almost arrived a few minutes later when a Joe Culshaw free-kick from 20 yards struck the post and Chris Jones sent the rebound wide.

Several substitutions were made at half-time as 1876 adopted a different shape for the second period. The team pressed for an equaliser but it was the hosts who came close to increasing their advantage on 63 minutes when Mark Hawkins had to make a sharp save with his feet to keep the ball out.

Half-time substitute Gethin Thomas looked lively in midfield for 1876 and manufactured a chance to shoot from just outside the penalty area but his effort was saved.

As the game entered the final quarter hour, the hosts took advantage of a slip at the back which allowed Callum Parry to make the score 3-1.

Five minutes into stoppage time, Hotspur made it four as Alex Jones headed in at the back post after a free kick was swung into the box from the right.

The 4-1 scoreline was perhaps somewhat harsh given 1876’s contribution to the game overall, although credit is due to Hotspur for taking their chances at key moments.

Gwalchmai 2 (C Owen, Bulkley)
Holyhead Town 1 (Rowlands)

Gwalchmai’s good pre-season form continued with a narrow win over Holyhead at Maes Meurig on Tuesday.

Connor Owen and Callum Bulkley got the home goals, Jenson Rowlands replying for the Harbourmen, who applied plenty of pressure throughout but could not get the desired result.

Gwalchmai manager Liam Ewing was more than satisfied with the scoreline.

“They applied pressure for the majority of the match but we were composed and disciplined and made the most of the ball when in possession,” said Liam.

“Considering we had 8 players missing tonight and having to play some players out of position, the lads gave it their all and were rewarded with an impressive result.”

Tuesday’s win followed up from last Saturday’s 6-0 blitzing of Amlwch Town.

Dion Owen (3), Cameron Jones (2) and Connor Owen shared the Gwalchmai goals.

A fine win for Bont, Gwion Elidir and Cai Edwards notching the home goals.

Llannerchymedd 4 Llangefni Town Res 4

Mark Jones, Gavin Sharpe, Matthew Jones and Ryan Jones were the scorers for Llannerchymedd in an eight-goal thriller.

Buckley Town 0 CPD Y Rhyl 1879 0

Rhyl manager Gareth Thomas paid tribute to his team’s defensive effort against Buckley.

The tier 4 visitors picked up a very commendable draw against tier 2 opponents.

“I’m more than happy with the performance,” said Thomas. “For the last couple of games, Holywell and Porthmadog, we weren’t great defensively, but today they were outstanding.

“Players put bodies on the line, we were under the cosh for a fair amount of time, but we’ve come to a tier 2 side, kept a clean sheet, the back five have worked their socks off tonight, as have the midfield three. Excellent performance.”

Cam Thomas struck twice for Rhostyllen in this victory against a well-organised Coedpoeth.

A trialist provided the other home goal.
