Mynydd Isa Spartans 0 CPD Y Rhyl 1879 0

A brilliant battling performance from the Spartans earned them a draw in an entertaining match for all at the Argoed Battleground.

A quality Rhyl outfit started the brighter with a great effort from a Tom Cain free kick hitting the post.

Sam Reilly and Joe Mitchell forced the Rhyl keeper to make two brilliant saves in the second half to keep the game at 0-0, while Harri Wilkes in the Spartans goal equally showed his class, denying Macauley Taylor with a cracking stop, keeping a clean sheet and displaying excellent distribution throughout.

Spartans manager James Hollyoak said: “The whole side gave 110% tonight. It didn’t go unnoticed, leaving a buzz around the squad and rightly so, as the Spartans march on through pre-season.”

1879 manager Gareth Thomas, facing one of his former teams, said: “Not the best performance, but credit to them, they outworked us. We started off brightly, hit the post early doors, but couldn’t get that first goal. The first 15 minutes we did okay, after that they (Mynydd Isa) dominated the game, certainly up to the hour.

“We created a few chances in the second half, but overall didn’t do enough to win the game.”
