Dream Debuts: No 3 – Ffion Mair Roberts (Bethesda Athletic 2018-19)

North Wales Women’s League Division Two – September 23, 2018

It is quite a feat to score six goals on your debut but that is what Ffion Mair Roberts achieved in a Bethesda shirt in September 2018.

Ffion missed Pesda’s first-ever game – a 5-1 triumph at Rhyl Development seven days earlier – but was unstoppable in this double hat-trick display at Parc Meurig.

Two goals in the opening 10 minutes ensured Ffion got off to a flyer in her first outing for the newly-formed Bethesda side.

The 25th minute saw the third goal of the game. Substitute Rhian Roberts hit a beautiful, lofted pass over the top of the Penrhyn defence.

The ball fell nicely to Ffion Roberts, who completed her hat-trick with a fierce shot from inside the box.

It was four when Awel Ellis’ corner was cleared by the Bay defence, but Holly Beddall eventually bundled the ball into the back of the net.

Half-time: 4-0

Five minutes into the second-half, an ambitious shot by Ffion Roberts from a tight angle on the left was saved and almost fell to Ellis’ feet. Ellis chased the ball to win it back, and beat a couple of defenders and struck a fierce shot from the edge of the box past the keeper to make it 5-0.

Bay were hardly given the chance to recover as Ffion Roberts turned in the box and instinctively took a shot and found the net for her fourth.

Moments later Shannon Jade Jones burst beyond the defence and calmly passed the ball into the goal for 7-0.

Penrhyn never gave in, Kelsey Morrey and Molly Watkinson working especially hard up front.

In the 62nd minute, a cross found Watkinson who finished, but was unfortunately ruled offside.

On 65 minutes a Pesda corner reached Jenna Allsup whose shot was blocked and fell nicely to Angharad Evans, who found the back of the net.

Ffion later played for Llanberis

As the rain began to fall heavily, a one-two between Pesda’s Hannah McGoona and Ffion Roberts saw the latter volley home for 9-0.

Ellis scored her second with a curled free-kick from 20 yards to bring up double figures.

Rhian Roberts then released Ffion Roberts, who scored her sixth of the match to cap off a fantastic debut.

Shannon Jade Jones coolly made it a dozen before the end.

Ffion Roberts later moved on to Llanberis, where she formed an impressive up-front partnership with Awel Ellis.
