Man City eight wins away from beating The New Saints’ world record

Is The New Saints’ men’s football world record of 27 straight wins under threat from Manchester City ?

Pep Guardiola’s side look set to cruise to the Premier League title and are on course for an unprecedented quadruple after 20 consecutive victories on the bounce.

But City still have to extend that winning streak for another eight matches if they are to overtake Craig Harrison’s long-time invincibles of 2016-17.

TNS won every game between August 14 and December 30, 2016.

A 2-0 win at Cefn Druids on the latter date meant the current record 13-time Welsh Premier League champions registered a 27th successive victory in all competitions to eclipse the 26-game winning streak set by Johan Cruyff’s magnificent Ajax side of 1972.

The run of W’s ended for Harrison’s heroes when they were held 3-3 by Newtown in their first match of 2017.

European champions Bayern Munich have come closest since to equalling Saints’ feat with 23 victories in a row in 2020.

But the Park Hall outfit still possess the men’s football world record.

For Manchester City to better it, they must defeat Wolves on Tuesday night and then win home matches against Manchester United (Mar 7), Southampton (Mar 10), Borussia Monchengladbach (Mar 16), beat Fulham (Mar 13), Everton (Mar 20) and Leicester City (Apr 3) away and then – if they stand 27-0 at this point – conquer Leeds United at the Ethiad on April 10 to become world beaters.

The overall world record for most consecutive association football wins is held by Brazilian women’s side Corinthians.

They set a new world best in men’s or women’s football in August 2019 by celebrating a 28th win on the run. Their winning streak ended on 34.
