Flashback: Amazing day for Trearddur Bay (2010)

Ten years ago this weekend Trearddur Bay United were celebrating their latest giant-killing in one of the greatest runs by an underdog in the history of the Welsh Cup.

Following a stunning 3-0 win over tier 3 Welsh National League club Mold Alexandra in qualifying round two, the sixth-tier Anglesey League side thrashed Mid-Wales League outfit Penparcau at Lon Isallt to progress to the second round proper.

It was an amazing feat from the islanders, who had already won a host of domestic trophies in a short period under manager Chris Davies.

Bay twice trailed, but after Tim Adamkiewicz’s long range stunner made it 4-3 in the second half there was only going to be one winner.

“The lads played really well and over the 90 minutes deserved the win,” said boss Davies, who lifted the NWCFA Junior Cup with Trearddur for the first time in the club’s history in 2009.

“Adamkiewicz and Craig Brodie controlled the midfield and Jackie Welsh and Asa Thomas were a continuous threat when we were attacking.“

Penparcau, sixth in their tier 3 league, struck first after four minutes when Matt Davies blasted in through a crowd of players.

But veteran Jackie Welsh equalised for the islanders on 11 minutes when he turned his marker and rounded the keeper to slot home.

Two minutes later Asa Thomas’ free-kick hit the post and Ian Williams netted from the rebound but was adjudged offside.

Chances fell at both ends before on 31 minutes Trearddur took the lead, Barrie Lavelle volleying in from a Williams free-kick.

Seven minutes later Penparcau were back on terms when Mark Gornall, a former Welsh Premier player with Porthmadog, hit a glorious free-kick into the top corner, making the tie fascinatingly poised at 2-2 at the interval.

The Mid-Wales visitors then nudged ahead for a second time three minutes into the second stanza when Darren Smith converted from a corner.

One-time Bangor City player Welsh was in vintage form for the hosts, however, and the 47-year-old he made it three apiece on 55 minutes.

Penparcau’s keeper produced brilliant saves to deny Thomas and Williams, but he was powerless on 65 minutes when Adamkiewicz spotted the custodian off his line and chipped home from just beyond the halfway.

The visitors then had a player sent off and Bay’s passage was all but sealed when Williams beat the offside trap to score.

Thomas added a double in this famous season which saw him bag 112 goals in all competitions,, and to complete a nightmare day for the visitors they had a second player dismissed before the end.

On a great day for Anglesey sides in the cup, Holyhead Hotspur and Gwalchmai enjoyed 4-0 victories over Welshpool and Barmouth respectively, while in an all-island tussle Llangefni Town pipped Llanfairpwll 3-2.

Trearddur Bay hosted Cefn Druids in the next round, but it proved a step too far as the Ancients won 7-0.
