Anglesey/Ynys Môn football greats past and present – No8 Asa Thomas

Few players in the history of North Wales football can match the goal scoring feats of Asa Thomas.

Ever since he burst onto the scene with a stunning 112-goal deluge in 2010/11, the Anglesey striking sensation has maintained a tremendous consistency in the net-finding department.

Over the past nine seasons at different levels of the Welsh football pyramid, Asa has bagged in excess of 400 goals.

As records are not available of Thomas’ stats in 2009/10, when he was at Holyhead Town, or prior to that, his realistic overall total is above 450.

All these milestones…..yet this Holyhead lad is still some way off his 30th birthday.

Asa’s most memorable campaign so far was 2010/11, when he amassed 112 goals from just 47 appearances for Trearddur Bay United.

He piled up 25 hat-tricks in an amazing season for the club, who won the Anglesey League, Dargie Cup, Megan Cup and Thomas and Williams Cup quadruple, as well as reaching the second round proper of the Welsh Cup.

Since that season, Asa has topped 40 goals five times and proved he can score at higher levels by finding the net regularly in the Gwynedd League, Welsh Alliance and, briefly, the Huws Gray Alliance with Holyhead Hotspur.

In 2011/12, Thomas switched to Hotspur, then in the Welsh Alliance, and poached 19 goals, but later that season returned to Trearddur Bay, then in the Gwynedd League, and picked up where he left off, banging in another 22.

The following season brought a fresh challenge as Thomas signed for Holyhead-based side Morawelon, who had just won the Anglesey League and NWCFA Junior Cup in their debut campaign.

Asa had two very productive seasons with the team, scoring 48 and 49 goals before Morawelon were unfortunately forced to fold.

Next for the prolific hitman came a season at struggling Welsh Alliance Division Two team Gaerwen, which spawned 22 goals, prior to a return to Trearddur Bay United, where the glory all began.

That 2015/16 term was one to remember for Bay and Thomas, the club winning Welsh Alliance Division One at the first attempt and the striker pocketing 48 goals.

The season after was split between Bay and Hotspur, with 26 goals being scored, then at the start of 2017/18, Asa joined the Holyhead Town revolution.

Another magnificent campaign saw the Harbourmen land the Gwynedd League title – completing a pyramid championship treble for Thomas, who notched 45 goals.

The current season sees Asa back in the Welsh Alliance where he has struck 19 times to date (up to March 2, 2019).

Other honours won by Thomas in the game include representing the North Wales Coast FA squad at the UEFA Regions Cup.

He is truly a phenomenon with an uncanny knack for finding the net and who knows how many goals he can actually pile up before hanging up his boots.
