Former Llangollen Town manager Gareth Lloyd restarts our series of All-Time North Wales Football XI’s.
Players picked can be from any era. Managers can choose players they idolised as a kid, played alongside, played against, managed or managed against.
Gareth said: “I have tried to pick a squad from predominantly those I have seen and managed at Welsh National League level from the Wrexham area.
“I have avoided picking those that have had long spells at my own club Llangollen, as having spent so much time working with them so closely I could make a case for so many to be included (the exception is of course in goal).”
In my opinion the best goalkeeper in the area bar none over the last 20 years.
It was clear from the amount of time he spent at youth and reserve level that his talent was immense.
After being released he was a huge asset to Bala Town’s Cymru Alliance squad after spells in the Welsh Premier with Bangor City and Caersws among others.
A good influence in the dressing room away from the pitch as well and a great character.
As I’ve said before one of the toughest defenders I have faced.
Strong in the air and a real leader at the back. Also a threat from set pieces and another who contributed to his club as much off the pitch as on it.
I had the pleasure of working with Munch for one season and he was another leader.
Despite a successful season at Cymru Alliance level, it is really at Albion where he has made his mark.
Was ahead of his time as a youngster and as well as weighing with some important goals his no nonsense style and reading of the game was fantastic.
Over the next few years when looking back it will be even more evident what an important part he has played at Cefn on and off the pitch.
Would complete this strong back three superbly.
Good enough in his prime to play central midfield as well. Strong in the air and able to play out from the back when required.
Hugely focused and committed and another who would make the greatest of demands from this side and lead by example.
First came across Mike when he played for Rhosddu at youth level.
Has consistently found the back of the net from all attacking areas of the pitch.
Did play for Llangollen in the 2009-10 season before moving to Caernarfon Town. Has certainly improved with age and has been making QP tick for the last few seasons. Another who wears the captain’s armband at his club.
One of the area’s fiercest competitors and a typical box to box midfielder.
Strong in the tackle and capable of creating chances for those around him.
Appeared for Cefn Druids in the Welsh Premier but really made his name at Penycae.
Probably one of the most recognisable names and faces in the Wrexham area.
Has appeared for a host of clubs in the area and without doubt one of the most skillful players that each one has seen.
A set piece specialist with one of the best array of techniques and passing ability I’ve seen.
Quality player who could operate anywhere across the attacking positions.
Also appeared for Buckley, Cefn Druids and Lex XI. His work-rate would be invaluable.
Tenacious midfielder who has been making the Gresford midfield tick over for a number of years.
Great at set pieces and capable of scoring the odd long range goal or two.
One of the area’s deadliest marksmen over the last 15 or so years.
Has been one of the best finishers and led the line superbly.
A great club man as well and has scored many a goal against my sides over the years.
I had the pleasure of coaching Joe as a youngster in the Llangollen youth sides.
He was exceptional at that age and it was no surprise that he transferred that talent to AAA in his senior career.
Pacy and really talented with the ability to have played at a much higher level.
Injuries have curtailed his last couple of seasons but still turns out for Chirk when able.
