A true football man remains at the helm for Caernarfon Town FC

While it has been a disappointing week for Caernarfon Town with two doors to European football slammed in their faces, there is some happy news to report from the club.

The Canaries have announced that Paul Evans will remain chairman for next season.

Paul has been on the club’s Board of Directors for 10 years and took on the role of interim chairman last summer.

He said: “It’s been an honour to carry out the duties of the chairman over the past season.

“I’ve supported Caernarfon since the early eighties and I’m sure that every supporter will understand how much it means to me.

“The Board has been fantastic over the past season, as has everyone else at the club, from Sean (Eardley) and his team to the ladies set up, Academy staff, volunteers and the Cofi Army.

“To be given this opportunity to carry on as Chairman is a special privilege and I will do my very best for the club and the greatest and most loyal supporters in Wales. I’ll try not to let anyone down.”

Darren Billinghurst stays as vice-chairman, with the remainder of the Board remaining in place.

This week’s early conclusion of the Welsh domestic football season due to coronavirus delivered a double blow for the Cofis.

One potential route into the Europa League was cut off when the FAW postponed the 2019-20 Welsh Cup competition.

Caernarfon were due to face Cardiff Metropolitan in the semi-finals, with The New Saints and Prestatyn Town paired in the other last four clash.

The FAW said it hopes the competition will be completed later in the summer, but not in time for nominations for Europe.

Therefore, the Welsh Cup place up for grabs in Europe instead goes to the fourth-placed club in the Welsh Premier – Barry Town United.

With Caernarfon also close to Barry in the top six, the Canaries could have reached Europe via the league had they gathered enough points from their remaining games, but that possibility is now also over through no fault of their own.

The financial rewards for European qualification are immense and this unsatisfactory end to the season has cost Caernarfon Town the chance to secure vital prize funds.
