My All-Time North Wales XI: No 6 – Mark Thomas (Llangoed)

Llangoed FC’s Mark Thomas is the latest manager to choose his All-Time North Wales XI.

Players selected can be from any era. Managers can name players they worshiped as a kid, played alongside, played against, managed or managed against.

Known popularly as Cabbage, Mark had an illustrious career as a player before moving into management.

He played for Bangor City in the League of Wales, as well as Trearddur Bay, Rhayader Town, Cemaes Bay, Caernarfon Town, Porthmadog, Bethesda and Glantraeth, where he won the Cymru Alliance double in 2005/06.

Paul Pritchard

Best shot stopper I’ve seen. Being with Glantraeth made him what he became.

Played in Welsh Premier, won the Inter-Island Games with Ynys Môn last year, saving a penalty in the final.

Tomos Jones

“Tomos Boded” gives everything, a Jamie Carragher type defender. A manager’s dream.

Jason Thomas

Llangefni Town, great left foot. Understood the game so well.

Warren Gibbs

My captain at Glantraeth. Proud to walk out behind him for any game.

Tony Adams of Anglesey/Bangor area football, brilliant central defender.

Gareth Owen

Great defender. Didn’t care about plaudits just did his job. Spice boy.

Considering he was from Cemaes always mixed in with us from Bangor; he loved the banter in changing rooms.

Nigel Barry

Mr Football on and off the field. I wouldn’t listen to anyone in football (very stubborn I was) except him – why I don’t know. Could probably see him in me .. I wanted to be Nigel Barry.

Rob “Gobs” Williams

Most naturally gifted player I’ve seen. Caernarfon born and bred. Ex-Tranmere. Always signed for clubs where Paul Whelan was in charge.

Richard Jones

“Rich Bach” from Boded. As a 17-year-old playing against him opened my eyes, different gravy.

Midfield playmaker who could always be relied upon to do a job anywhere.

Outstanding with Llanfairpwll in the mid to late 1980s, he attracted the interest of several Football League clubs.

Later starred for Cemaes Bay, his home village Bodedern and Holyhead Hotspur among other clubs.

Paul Roberts

Bangor City legend, scored 147 Welsh Premier goals. A very good friend.

I didn’t think two-footed players existed till I met Paul.

Never forget telling him he was selected for Wales Under-21s with his father.

Richard “Pigeon” Owen

Never the best player he’d tell you that, but he’d score all the time.

Goal machine. When Bethesda won the Welsh Alliance back in 2008-09, Pigeon scored 47 league goals and 59 in all competitions.

Jackie Welsh

Met him when I joined Trearddur Bay. I was 16 at the time but I was in awe….long blonde hair lightening quick and believe me could look after himself, opened my eyes put it that way.

Strong, direct attacking midfielder who had a spell with Bangor City in the 1980s and has also played for several Anglesey clubs including Trearddur Bay United, Cemaes Bay and various Holyhead teams.
