Welsh Alliance: Hotspur triumph in battle of top two, Denbigh hit five at Llanberis, great cup win for Llangefni Reserves

Defender Alex Jones’ late goal ensured Holyhead Hotspur moved seven points clear at the Welsh Alliance League Division One summit after a 1-0 win over visitors Glan Conwy.

The first half at the New Stadium was a very cagey affair with Hotspur playing into the wind.

Chris Jones had a chance from 12 yards which was well saved by Glan keeper Adam Jones.

Dewi Thomas was also unable to finish at the back post after a good knock down from Alex Jones.

In the second half, Holyhead played with more tempo and intent and it was one-way traffic with chances falling for Chris Jones, Rob Jones and Dean Garmey from range.

A big moment then when Dewi Thomas had an excellent goal ruled out for offside to the home team’s frustration with a Glan defender standing on the post!

But then on 89 minutes, good work from youngster Deian Parry saw him pick out Alex Jones unmarked to power a header past the keeper.

Hotspur manager Darren Garmey said after the game: “We are delighted with the performance and how we defended as a team. 

“We did not concede a chance all afternoon and that is pleasing because it is an area we want to improve. The late winner from Alex was an enjoyable moment but we always felt it was coming.”

Denbigh Town are third, eight points behind Hotspur having played a game less following a convincing 5-0 victory at Llanberis.

The prolific Jake Walker bagged a hat-trick for the visitors, Chris Bennett adding a double.

Meilir Williams and Iwan Jones were on target for Blaenau Amateurs in a 2-0 win over Prestatyn Sports, while Nantlle Vale defeated Llandyrnog United by the same score, Gethin Thomas and Gavin Edwards finding the net.

Sam Thomas notched the only goal after a mere 22 seconds as Llanrwst United edged past St Asaph City 1-0 and it finished 3-1 for Greenfield at Mynydd Llandegai, Danny Calvert, Dan Sim and Brett Johns the away marksmen.

Penrhyndeudraeth and Llanrug United drew 3-3 in a thriller. 

Cai Henshaw, Steven Jones and Tomos Smith netted for the hosts to put them three-up entering the latter stages, but Dylan Owen, Gavin Lloyd-Jones and Iwan Edwards rescued a dramatic point for the visitors.

Friday night saw Bodedern Athletic take a well-deserved 2-0 success at Llandudno Albion, Shaun Jenkins breaking the deadlock on 19 minutes before Casey Boylan converted a penalty after 78.

Division Two

In a relegation zone battle, Aberffraw fought back from 1-0 down at half time to beat Pentraeth 3-1.

Marquis Holland gave Pen an interval lead, but after the break, Gary Bolton (2) and Nathan Moore turned the tables.

Elgan Roberts (2, 1 pen) and Ciran Jones earned Llannefydd an excellent 3-1 victory at leaders Penmaenmawr Phoenix.

Captain Dan Jones’ double led Amlwch Town to a superb 2-1 triumph at Barmouth and Dyffryn.

Gaerwen are now just a point behind leaders Pen Phoenix with a game in hand following a 5-0 drubbing of Llandudno Amateurs, Gethin Davies (2), Chris Bennett (2) and Connor Gordon combining to deliver the goods.

Y Felinheli pipped Llandudno Junction 4-3, Gruff John, Iwan Owen (2) and Owain Roberts for the hosts, Jack Nettleton (2) and Jack Williams on the mark for the Railwaymen.

Dafydd Gwyn Jones (2) and Jamie Banks made sure Pwllheli saw off Mochdre Sports 3-0 and Kinmel Bay took the spoils 2-1 at Gwalchmai thanks to a second-half Matty Griffiths brace, Corey Sinnott with the home consolation goal.

Llangefni Town Reserves advanced to the Lock Stock Fireworks Challenge Cup final after a brilliant 2-0 triumph at Denbigh Town Reserves, an own goal and Luke Waller putting the Anglesey visitors through.

In the Reserves Division, first-half goals from Will Edwards, Morgan Ashworth and Frankie Arkwright (pen) sealed Colwyn Bay a 3-0 win against Llanrwst United.

Meical Owen and Robin Whiteside Thomas struck for Llanrug United in a 2-1 derby victory over Llanberis.
