North East Wales League: Caerwys trip up in cup, nine for Chirk Town, Borras prevail

Elgan Hughes converts a penalty for Caerwys against Mold Town United

Mold Town United upset the form book with a 3-1 win at Caerwys in the NEWFA Horace Wynne Cup.

The visitors clinched the tie in the dying seconds following two howlers from home keeper Seb Czubaj.

The Polish stopper, who had a great game at Brymbo the previous weekend, was a virtual spectator in the second half as Caerwys threw everything at Mold, who had deservedly gone ahead through a Stuart Hayes header after 18 minutes.

Caerwys got back into the game after a poor first 25 minutes. Elgan Hughes equalised from the spot following a foul on Tom Cumming after 47.

The hosts had opportunities to have gone ahead earlier than that when Dylan Mackie saw a good effort pushed wide, then Ryan Jones and Cumming had chances when well placed.

On the hour mark from six yards out, Josh Richardson narrowly headed over the bar from a great Jack Cox free kick before Mackie hit the bar from close range.

Ryan Jones shot wide with Caerwys pushing for the winner, then Hayes claimed his second in the 89th minute when Czubaj totally miskicked the ball.

A minute later Hayes took advantage of another slip by Czubaj to seal the win.

An after-match protest could yet change the outcome of this tie.

Jordan Walker (2) and Sam Riley ensured Mynydd Isa Spartans progressed to the next round with a 3-1 success at Acton, whose only response was an own goal.

Jack Hanley and Dan McGinnes found the net for Borras Park Albion in a 2-1 beating of Rhydymwyn.

Chirk Town battered Airbus Under-19s 9-0, Tom Freeman knocking in four, including a 12-minute hat-trick, Shaun Morris (3), Cam Roberts and Anthony Jones one each.
