Bangor 1876 attract better crowds than Rangers or Liverpool!

Bangor 1876 have a better following than Rangers or Liverpool…….Berwick Rangers and City of Liverpool that is!

But this is no joking matter.

The Gwynedd League club have performed marvels by ranking as the 132nd best supported non-league club in the UK – and this just half-a-season since forming.

The website Non-League Matters’ latest Global Attendance Figures feature the 250 most popular clubs outside of the Football League when it comes to getting people through the turnstiles.

Fan-owned Bangor 1876 comes out as the No1 supported non-league side playing in the Welsh system and makes the top 10 of non-league teams not based in England.

We can reveal that Colwyn Bay of the Cymru North should rate higher, though.

Bay’s average league crowd after their first 10 home games is 395 (and the figure rises to 412 if you count their Welsh Cup tie against Airbus).

Based on the 395 average league attendance, the Bay would be above Bangor 1876 and placed 110th.

Sadly, NLM’s Steve Martin reports that the Cymru North do not make their attendance figures available (no great surprise there) so the Bay’s glory moment will have to remain between us.

Wales’ top tier, the Cymru Premier, is not included in the list as it is a national competition and therefore does not come under the banner ‘non-league’.

One CN club, Corwen, is placed 186th in the NLM chart, with just one recorded attendance of 260. Mr Martin says this is an error.

“The reason that Corwen were included in the list is that one attendance for a match back in August was entered. This has now been deleted,” he added.

Bangor 1876 boast a highest turnout of 404, a lowest of 317 and an average 352 to rate 132nd.

City of Liverpool, a Northern Premier League North West club, are 138th with a 343 average and Berwick, relegated from the Scottish League last season and now in the tier-five Lowland League, occupy 141st spot (average 335).

Wrexham, who play in the English pyramid National League, fare best of the non-league Welsh clubs, sitting third overall in the UK with an average crowd of 4070, behind Stockport County in second and Notts County top.

But arguably the biggest feat is a tremendous first showing for Bangor 1876, who created more good news this weekend when they went top of the Gwynedd League by making it 10 straight wins with a 6-0 thrashing of Llanystumdwy.
