Women’s recreational football: Point to start for Trearddur Bay, Llanfairfechan coach gives debut to her mum!

It was a proud occasion for Trearddur Bay Ladies as they played their first-ever match

A first-ever game for newly-formed Trearddur Bay and a home team manager giving a debut to her mother!

It was no ordinary day at the Recreation Ground, Llanfairfechan on Sunday.

Llanfair welcomed Anglesey newcomers Trearddur for a North Wales Ladies Recreational League Group West clash which ended goal-less.

The heavy, damaged surface – a result of the recent prolific rain – won the day in the end, but it was still a great occasion for both teams.

The first 20 minutes saw Llanfairfechan start brightly with fantastic interchange play between Maddie Williams and Rachel Evans creating plenty of opportunities going forward.

Credit must be given to Gemma Thomas of Trearddur Bay as she was called upon more than once with last-ditch tackles to stop the Fechan in front of goal.

The second 20 started with Llanfair coach Sadie Richards making the tactical sacrifice of moving centre-half Kelsey Hughes to play centre-forward.  Kelsey was definitely up for the challenge, creating space and opportunities for herself and her-team mates, but Bay keeper Georgia Magee now began to make some superb saves between the sticks.

Within the last few minutes Trearddur began to push Fechan back and out of nowhere a fine strike from Shanellie Cooper came crashing back off the post.

By the final third the pitch was really cut up and made creating chances difficult for both teams. Llanfair pushed hard but could not finish off their brave opponents.

Both sides must be commended for their performance in atrocious conditions.
