Anglesey/Ynys Môn football greats past and present – No12 Medwyn Evans

Medwyn Evans (back row – furthest right) lines up with Wrexham AFC in 1983-84

There are many different types of midfielder – some can be robust ball-winners, while others bring skill and elegance to the middle of the park.
Medwyn Evans probably falls into the latter category.

Born on November 8, 1964, and hailing from Brynteg on Anglesey, Med represented Wales as a schoolboy.

After leaving school he spent three years as an apprentice with Wrexham AFC and was offered a professional contract.

Unfortunately, his potential career was cut short by injury after just one season, 1983-84 in which he made 17 first-team appearances when the Dragons were in Football League Division Four.

He was in the same Wrexham squad as Darren Baker, a fellow Anglesey man who for 20 years held the record as the club’s youngest goalscorer in the Football League and has also featured in this series of Ynys Môn Football Greats Past and Present.

Med went on to represent Bangor City in their Northern Premier League days under John Mahoney before later turning out for Bethesda Athletic, Glantraeth, Bodedern and Llannerchymedd, where he became an assistant-manager to Tomos Jones.

Having Med’s prowess as a motivator and tactician on the sidelines was of massive benefit to the team and manager of the time Jones.

Both of Med’s sons followed in his footsteps. Chris became an apprentice at Wrexham and Deion with Tranmere Rovers and Shrewsbury Town.

They went on to play with some success for several teams in the Anglesey and Bangor areas, with Chris tragically leaving us in 2015, aged 27.

Med will mainly be remembered for his skillful midfield play across a career where he always operated at a good level. He would undoubtedly excel on today’s 3G pitch surfaces.
