Coedpoeth United are on cloud nine after recording one of the greatest wins in the Tier 4 club’s history – beating Cymru North Guilsfield on penalties in the second round of the Welsh Cup..
While football in the village dates back to the 1870s, the current club was reformed in 1999.
They have reached the last 32 of the Welsh Cup just once before – back in 2009-10.
In that season, Coedy had a walkover against Llanllyfni in the preliminary round, defeated Penparcau 2-0 in round one (north), triumphed 2-1 at Llansantffraid Village in R2 and came up against Welsh Premier League side Caersws in R3, losing 4-1 at the Recreation Ground.
Coedpoeth also made the second round in 2010-11, getting past Amlwch and Greenfield before exiting 2-1 after extra time at Rhos Aelwyd. Had they got past the Aelwyd, they would have met Guilsfield in round 3!
Coedpoeth will now be hoping to draw a big club in the final 32 of the 2026-27 competition.
“Fantastic result for us today. Everyone to a man was absolutely outstanding. We deserved the win and did our homework prior to the game.
“The lads listened and committed themselves to our game plan. We had moments in the game where we had to suffer, which you expect playing against a team 2 tiers higher but we remained disciplined and came out the other side.
“If anything we’re disappointed we didn’t get the job done in the 90 but credit to Guilsfield they kept coming.
“Huge result and a special day for the club but this is just the start for us and this team. We’re excited for what the next round holds but one thing is for sure we’re playing to win.”
“Absolutely delighted with the performance of our lads who worked their socks off to get the result against good quality tier 2 opponents and I would say we deserved the win overall despite it going to a high quality penalty shootout
“We are now in almost uncharted territory and looking forward to the next round draw
“MoM was Tom Lloyd with a masterful midfield shift “
