Proud occasion for Prestatyn Town FC!

Prestatyn Town Dragons could not have wished for a tougher baptism with their first-ever league match coming against the champions Colwyn Bay.

Although the Bay won Friday night’s North Wales Women Recreational League clash at Bastion Gardens 5-0, the home side could feel very proud of their performance.

It was an historic occasion for Prestatyn Town as the first competitive ladies team representing the club took the field.

Manager Adam Prescott said: “Taking on a very strong and well drilled Colwyn Bay team we knew it was going to be tough. We played some great football at times but just couldn’t push past a strong defence for the opposition.

“Our goalkeeper Sam Hartley was fantastic between the sticks and pulled off top save after save, earning herself opposition POTM. The ladies did themselves proud and really took the game to Colwyn Bay and the result was an after thought and the occasion was more important than anything else.”

Samantha O’Carroll scored four for Colwyn Bay, Anna Jones adding a single.

Prestatyn – a pioneer town for Welsh women’s football

The town of Prestatyn has been a true pioneer for women’s football.
In 1969, a Prestatyn Ladies team was formed which paved the way for the ever-growing respect and esteem women’s football is held in today.
The team became one of the leading sides not just in Wales, but in the United Kingdom. That they achieved this at a time when women’s football was seen as a total novelty and something not really to be taken seriously is all the more rewarding for those who were involved.
Despite opposition from the FA of Wales, the team came from obscurity to a stage where they supplied two thirds of the players in the Welsh national side and had representatives at the 1970 Women’s World Cup in Italy.
Their trailblazing story came to an end in the 1970s, yet the tireless groundwork they did opened the doors for so many.
Prestatyn has had various ladies teams representing it in recent years, but the Dragons are thought to be the first Prestatyn Town women’s side to compete.
