Cups catch-up: News from the NWCFA Junior Cup, NEWFA Challenge Cup and NWCFA Intermediate Cup

NWCFA JUNIOR CHALLENGE CUP ROUND ONE

CPD Caernarfon Borough 1 CPD Mountain Rangers 4

Junior Cup holders Mountain Rangers booked their place in the next round with a convincing 4–1 victory over Caernarfon Borough.
Rangers came flying out of the blocks, creating plenty of danger down the left, with Daniel Owen proving a constant threat. His pressure earned Rangers a penalty in the 10th minute, and Cai Owen confidently stepped up to give the visitors the lead.
Just two minutes later, Rangers doubled their advantage, Daniel Owen netting directly from a corner.
Borough responded well and began to create opportunities of their own, using the flick-on effectively. Rangers’ defence stood firm until Borough were awarded a penalty in the 18th minute. Ian Pleming calmly slotted home to reduce the deficit to 2–1.
Rangers continued to push for a third and were rewarded when Daniel Owen was fouled on the edge of the box. Dion Jones produced a superb free kick to make it 3–1.
The second half was a competitive battle, with both sides enjoying spells of possession. Dylan Roberts, the Rangers goalkeeper, produced an excellent save to deny Borough a route back into the game.
Borough were then awarded a second penalty, giving them another opportunity to close the gap, but Pleming sent his effort wide of the post.
Rangers eventually put the game beyond doubt in the 70th minute. A great run from wide by Dylan Owen saw his shot deflect into the path of Aeron Williams, who calmly slotted home to make it 4–1.

Crozzy 2 CPD Deiniolen 1

Two second-half goals from substitute Danny Talbot – one an 84th minute winner – ensured Crozzy advanced to the next stage.
Talbot broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, but in no time Deiniolen captain Cian Pleming levelled the tie.
On the hour, Crozzy had prolific scorer Aidan McBride red-carded, but the sides were evened up after 76 when Pleming also saw red.
It was down to Talbot to clinch it six minutes from time via a Kacper Spirydowicz assist.

Glan Conwy 1 Llysfaen 2

Not content to just be making headlines in the Welsh Cup and FAW Amateur Trophy, Llysfaen are also now on the march in the Junior Cup.
Luke Bennett gave Glan Conwy the lead just before half time, but after the break net-finders from Josh Williams and Jake Reynolds sent Faen through.

Glantraeth 2 Llandyrnog United 4

Josh Griffiths scored all four goals for Llandyrnog – including three in the closing 13 minutes – tn send his side into round two.
Goals from Ashley Westwell and Jamie Roberts (penalty) had kept Glantraeth in the contest, but Griffiths heroics ensured last season’s runners-up advanced.

CPD Llanerchymedd 2 Llangoed & District 1

Iolo Jones struck on 26 minutes and Owen Rowlands after 72 to seal victory for Llanerchymedd in a close-fought island derby.
Ethan Walker bagged an injury-time consolation for Llangoed.

Llanfairpwll 4 Towyn 3

Towyn lost a 3-1 lead at Maes Eilian, where sub Carwyn Roberts scored a 97th minute decider to win the day for Llanfairpwll.
The visitors were 2-0 and 3-1 up, thanks to goals from Lewie Foston, Charlie Hill and Owain Roberts, Jake Turnbull replying with a penalty for Pwll, before the islanders turned the tide from the midway point of the second half.
Dei Thomas cut the arrears to one goal on 65, then Turnbull made it 3-3 after 74.
Penalties were looming until Turnbull set up Roberts for that late, late winner.

Meliden 2 Amlwch Town 2 (Meliden won 4-3 on pens)

Amlwch led 2-0 through a Tomos Williams double, but 10-man Meliden, who had Rio Ross red-carded on 41 minutes, rallied late to force penalties through goals from Kieran Garnett-Hughes and Paul Brady.
Richard Hillier-Evans then saved three spot-kicks in the Meliden goal, with Brady and Gareth Walsh converting to send The Miners through 4-3 on pens.

Rhuddlan Town 2 Holyhead Town 1

Craig Moore’s 35th minute strike handed Holyhead a half time lead, but goals on 72 and 76 from Liam Bowers, the latter a penalty, making it doubles in four consecutive games for the captain, booked progression for the North East Coast East Division One side.

Rhyl Rangers 0 CPD Henllan 7

Shaun Davies (2), Harry Payne, Alex Thomas, Elgan Hughes (penalty), Connor Lloyd and Francis Roberts shared the goals for Henllan in the biggest win of the round.

NEWFA MEN’S CHALLENGE CUP ROUND ONE

Chirk AAA 3 Hawarden Rangers 3 (Chirk won 4-3 on pens)

Giant-killing at Holyhead Road where Tier 5 Chirk eliminated fourth-tier Hawarden Rangers on spot kicks.
Tom Freeman’s penalty gave the Colliers an 11th minute lead, but Josh Robertson levelled for Hawarden before the break.
Two goals in four minutes at the start of the second period from Lewis Jones put Chirk in control, but a Callum Cartwright pair, including a 90th minute equaliser, forced pens.
Hawarden had Louis Anglesea sent off for a second yellow after 69 minutes.
Sam Nash converted the decisive pen to put Chirk in the next round.

Coedpoeth United 6 CPD Yr Wyddgrug 1

Tom Williams (3), Joe Colley, Jack Massey and Iwan Bennett shared the goals for victorious Coedpoeth, Joe Harrison with Yr Wyddgrug’s consolation.

NWCFA INTERMEDIATE CHALLENGE CUP

CPD Mynydd Llandegai 0 CPD Aberffraw 4

Gethin Davies was a hat-trick hero for an Aberffraw side which coasted into the next round of the Intermediate Cup.
Captain Arwel Williams was also on the mark for Berffro.

CPD Penrhyndeudraeth 2 CPD Cerrigydrudion 8

Tirion Griffiths (3), Tom Watkin-Jones (3, 1 pen) and Alun Vaughan-Evans (2) shared the goals as Cerrig stormed into the next stage, Cian Goodman-Shephard with a consolation double for Penrhyndeudraeth.
