Hot and hilly at the Caernarfon 10k

It was hot and hilly last Sunday for nearly 300 elite and mainly club runners at the annual but rather challenging Caernarfon 10k race.

Local outfit Meirionnydd RC celebrated some outstanding performances including the top four places for their six quality entries.

Dion Griffith was the overall winner in a chip time of 31 minutes and 53 seconds and in a fast finish, he was just five seconds ahead of club rival Gavin Stuart in 31.58, and Tomos Roberts third in 32.23; whilst Ifan Dafydd was fourth in 33.26.

Llio Jones (Cybi Striders) was first female finisher in 40.03, with Lydia Sharpe second in 40.11 and Elliw Haf Roberts (Eryri Harriers) third in 41.39. There were 293 finishers.

There were some excellent results too for many well-known local athletes including Noa Vaughan (Eryri Harriers) 5th in 34.12; Steffan Sayer (Menai T&F) 6th in 34.48; Jonathan Kettle – formerly with NWRRC, and now with Eryri Harriers 11th and 1st M50 in 37.12; and young Joe Culverhouse (Colwyn Bay) was 20th and 2nd MU20 in 39.14.

Many local clubs were well represented and collected several prestigious age category and finishing medals, including North Wales Road Runners with six out of their nine team members winning podium honours.

Stuart Culverhouse was 51st and 3rd M50 in 43.34, whilst master veteran and club chairman Kevin Slattery won his M70 cat with a determined display in 81st place in 47.25. Steve Roberts was 110th and 3rd M60 in 50.39 and Kay Hatton 1st F60 in 119th place overall, and 22nd female, in 51.23.

Club newcomer Jenny Appleton won her F55 age cat as the 26th female finisher in 52.13. Nia Lister took 156th place in 55.18, and master vet Rob Fryer shook off recent injury woes to claim 3rd M70 in 58.01.

Kevin Higgins posted 60.17 in 208th place, and Gwen Charlton claimed 212th place in 60.28.

Visitors boosted the numbers at North Wales parkruns

LLANDRILLO-YN-RHOS

Local footballer and referee Aaron Dodwell recorded a new course PB at the Llandrillo yn Rhos parkrun of just 16 minutes and 36 seconds, but visitor Colin Latham (Dragons RC Sale) gave chase all the way to finish in second place in 16.57, with promising JM1-14 athlete Lucas Burgess third with a CPB 17.25.

Gemma Moore (Eryri Harriers) was first female finisher in an outstanding 18.18, followed by Emma Alofs on her debut in 19.36, with Alex Aldous third in 20.22. There were 483 finishers.

North Wales Road Runners had seven members involved with Richard Scamans first finisher in 21.53, but Mal Preece close behind in 22.02 in 58th place and 2nd VM60. Master vet Barrie Wells won his VM70 in 98th place in a CPB 24.18, and Daniel Hennell was 156th in 26.08.

Another master vet, Don Hale, is slowly building back his fitness after some health issues and clocked 27.42 to be 3rd VM70 in 202nd place, Helen Hannam was 258th in 29.34 and veteran Len Jackson finished 269th in 29.48.

GOG Triathlon had six runners and their top three members were: Steve Owen 16th in 19.10; Andy Brazier 62nd in 22.15; and Ashley Tomlinson 126th in CPB 25.15.

Colwyn Bay AAC: Josh Mottram 40th place and third in new SM20 age cat in 20.55, whilst Ian Taylor was 71st in 22.55.

Porth Eirias Runners had five members at Rhos with Jasper McQueen their first counter in 32nd overall and a CPB of 20.28; with Barry Palmer next in 126th place and Llyr Jones third.

Some other notable local results: Gareth Southworth (Cybi Striders) 42nd in 21.00; Gwyn Williams (Rhedwyr Hebog Runners) 44th and a new course PB, Darren Dentith 51st and CPB 21.42; Morgan Kendall 103rd in 23.22; Mike
Pemberton 127th and 2nd VM70 25.17.

Special mention to first-time visitor to Rhos Parkrun, legendary super-veteran Roger Harrison Jones (Prestatyn RC)
who won his VM85-89 age cat in 35.41; whilst fellow super-vet Jack Thomas (Buckley) finished 403rd in 36.27.

CONWY

Plenty of visiting athletes at Conwy parkrun with Andy Woodhead first in just 17.55, second Peter Vale (Bromsgrove & Redditch) in 18.57, with George Schreuder (University of Birmingham Tri Club) third on his debut in 19.16.

Top female was debutant Katherine Denby in 22.11, with fellow first-timer Heather Lennox second in 24.41 and Kasia Heywood third in 24.48. There were 254 finishers.

Some other notable results: Simon Nixon (Denbigh Harriers) 24th in 22.47; Martin Green (Meirionnydd RC) 48th in 25.12; and Jonathan Kettle (Eryri Harriers) 55th in 25.31; Tony Parvin 68th in 26.11; John Stallard 101st in 28.20; Kevin Higgins 105th in 28.36; and Bethan Wyn Roberts and Amanda Durber ran together in 28.39 for 108/109th places.

GOG Triathlon had eight members involved and their top three were: 33rd Neil Vicars Harris in 24.24; JW11-14 athlete Enya Maguire Evans 64th in 25.49; and super-vet Liz Evans 65th and 1st VM75 in 25.35.

PRESTATYN

The first four finishers were all first-timers: Chris Green 18.25, Oliver Franklin 18.41, Ella Taylor 19.27.

With Ella claiming the top female place, second position went to Donna Beard (Rochdale Triathlon Club) with a new course PB in 19.27, whilst JW11-14 athlete Freya Roberts Howie finished third in 23.43. There were 252 finishers.

Prestatyn RC entered 16 and their top three finishers were: Oliver Birch Jones 5th in 19.46; Jamie Betts 6th in 19.58; and Lewis Price 12th in 20.30. Martin Cortvriend was 48th and won his VM70 age cat in 25.16.

PENRHYN

It was a close finish for the first three athletes at the Penrhyn Castle parkrun with James Allen first in 18.10, visitor Lucas Present second in 18.12 and first-timer Christopher Parker third in 18.28.

First female was Susan Begent (Vegan Runners) on her debut in 24.10, Bethan Philips was second in 24.28, with Stephanie Philippaerts third on her debut in 25.16. There were 267 finishers.
