Connah’s Quay Nomads have expressed disappointment over the level of punishment dished out to Cymru Premier champions The New Saints over its illegal approach to a player signed for the Deeside club.

TNS have been fined £180 by the FAW for breaking the rules in an attempt to recruit Nomads striker Callum West last season.

Nomads released the following statement today:

“Connah’s Quay Nomads can today confirm that an illegal approach was made by The New Saints for Callum West during the 2025/26 playing season.

The FAW’s Independent Appeals Panel was recently convened to consider the charge brought against The New Saints FC and found the charge under FAW Rule 71.4 proven, and the club were fined £180.00, in line with the recommended sanction/penalty for such a breach as set out in the FAW Guidelines on Disciplinary Sanctions & the Standard Minimum Penalties.

Rule 71.4 states;
a Club approached by a Professional Player under contract with another club, or intending to approach or negotiate with such a Player to conclude a contract, must inform the Player’s current club in writing before entering into negotiations with him/her;

The disciplinary charge was originally issued to The New Saints on 19th February 2026.

Whilst the club are pleased with the findings, we feel that the penalty handed out to The New Saints is extremely disappointing and provides very little dis-incentive for other clubs to respect the rules regarding illegal approaches.

The club are delighted to have retained the services of Callum West following an impressive first season in the JD Cymru Premier and are excited to have him available for our squad ahead of our upcoming UEFA Conference League fixtures.

The news of the punishment comes a day after The New Saints signed highly-rated Rhys Hughes from……Connah’s Quay Nomads.

Ggoalscoring midfielder Hughes, a 24-year-old former Wales youth international from Wrexham, makes the move after the expiry of his contract at Cymru Premier rivals Nomads.

Former Everton youngster Hughes has netted 33 goals in 72 appearances ior the Nomads over the past two seasons.
