Treble winners in their very first season – it simply could not have gone better for Holyhead Hotspur Development.
Today the Holy Islanders completed the terrific threesome of NWCFA West Division title, League Cup and Development League Final winners with an emphatic 5-0 triumph over East champions Kinmel Bay Development at Bethesda.
Cameron Buckley (2), Noel Owen, Mel McGinness (pen) and Huw Morris secured a 25th win in 27 games for Scott Hakesley triple heroes.
“Today we had the opportunity to make it a treble winning season.
As the game got underway I felt we took control from the start but found ourselves over-playing at times and struggling to find width so after 30 minutes resulted back to a 4-2-3-1 formation which allowed us to open up the pitch knowing if we did the right things at the right time goals would come.
On the 37th minute last week’s cup final MOTN young Reece Thomas found in form Cameron James Buckley to slot home and take us into the break 1-0
In the dressing room at half time we were happy as a group but felt by tweaking certain aspects of our play we would find ourselves more successful in front of goal.
Second half and what we’ve witnessed all season the lads produced once more. Macy And Dad Away Days finding Noel Owen to fire home. This was Noel’s first game back from injury and it was good to see him pick up where he left off – thanks to Tony Maguire for all his work with Noel.
With Kinmel Bay going long we felt going to wing-backs for the last 25 minutes would secure up our play and give us a more fluid end.
Changes made from a strong bench found us awarded a penalty with Melv McGinness stepping up to score. Ten minutes later a Ryan Woodruff corner found Melv who put in a lovely cross for Huw Morris to get a well deserved goal.
Cameron finished off today’s victory with a great solo effort. Jake Chapman and his defence yet again keeping a clean sheet, making it I believe 16 for the season.
As a squad every single player has played their part, trained extremely hard all season and deserve their rewards.
We will now take a small break before a night of enjoyment on the 5th June in which all family and fans are invited The Port Inn Holyhead @18.00 start.
From myself I want to say thank you to my staff and my players who have made this season enjoyable. Taking on this challenge I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep everyone happy all the time but I like to think I tried my best and did everything possible to allow all a platform to progress and shine.
Once again thank you 🙏 and congratulations everyone involved 👍
Thank you to Kinmel Bay – great outfit and top lads.
Thanks to today’s officials.
And thank you to CP Bethesda Athletic for having us.“
